LS1 as a Daily Driver?
LS1 as a Daily Driver?
I like in MA and we have some pretty serious winters sometimes. I go to college, so I can always leave my car and walk wherever I wanna go. With that being said, how many of you have your LS1s as your daily drivers? It's a stock 01 Formula. The only things I'm gonna do to it prolly is a lid and a catback..nothing serious.
All these cars HP and torque is up top, correct? DOesn't that mean that I should be able to drive it decently in the snow? Thanks!

true the car has good top end, it still has much power off the line. they didnt put hte traction control switch in there for nothing. no, car is terrible enough in the rain let alone snow.
Don't try driving in the snow with your LS1. Mine is a daily driver but I also have a beater for the snow, rain, and long trips. Two of my buddies wrecked their LT1 and LS1 in the snow and I almost lost it on the highway in the rain driving normally. These cars weren't built for the snow or rain. The traction control helps but it just doesn't do enough to drive in those conditions....
from what I've read from peopel int he snowbelt, having the right tires, especially snow tires helps a ton..
Most of us are running "summer tires" for dry, let alone wet, and certainly not snow...
Where I live, I don't really haev to worry about snow. It literally rains every day from Oct to May, so I've become pretty comfortable in the rain (good tread design and depth help ALOT)

I unintentionally drove mine in snow once - it started snowing as I drove it back from the dealer. Not good with the stock tires.
I've seen a few around here with snow tires on in the winter, but it's only something you'd choose to do if you had no other option.

I am about to find out myself. I have to drive my formula this winter as my daily driver and we can have some nasty weather here in chicago particularly in Jan, Feb and March. Fortunately for me I work 15 minutes from my house and never have to get on a road that has a higher then 40mph speed limit. Plus I have my wifes FWD car for everything outside of work and back.
I can't wait till next year when I have a truck to daily drive and I can retire the formula to weekend warrior status. Then it's 100 shot of N20 time (woohoo).
I drove RWD V6 camaro's and firebirds for years up here. Is it really a lot harder then driving LS1's? If I go real easy on the gas with TCS on then wouldn't it handle similair to my old V6's in that respect?

I live in Cambridge and have had my Z for 2 winters now. For the first winter, I used my regular tires. Not good. Last winter, I got snow tires. It made a world of difference.
Just don't drive like an idiot and you'll be fine. If you can afford a spare set of winter tires, go for it. If not, you'll still survive as long as you don't do 60 down a snow & ice covered road!

I am in the same boat as u as well, i have to travel 15-20 min to work, i live in millis and i work at the natick mall, so i have to go through sherborn and they dont salt. But i did it with my monte SS and i think i can do it with the Camaro SS. I am just going ot be getting some studded snow tires. Thats my plan. I dont have TC but i just plan on adding some weight to the trunk.
I'm really surprized that noone has mentioned weight.
About a 100 to 150 lbs. in the "trunk" increases the winter drivability of any rear wheel drive car immensley.
I the 70s when most all of the cars were RWD I drove Cutlass's and with out the weight they were just about worthless. Add the weight and driving with care I made it the 80 mile round trip to work every day with out too much trouble.
And if you use the sand bags from the lumber company for weight then you can break one open and spread a little down for a traction aid if you get stuck.

drive it slow and ull be fine.. the idiots who can't drive in the snow are the ones that worry me more then my car, I can't control them..
