Low Milage Spark Plug Change Interval

Is there a correct time interval to change out spark plugs & Wires?

I have 44,000 miles on my 2001 SS and pulled the 2 front spark plugs on the driver side to take a look at them. They were both almost impossible to get out but both look okay. The car runs great but seems like it has lost a step over the years. The plugs are still the original factory plugs and were actually Denso's.

I work at a GM dealership. our plug intervals are recommended at 100k miles for plugs and wires. unless your severe into mods or running the heck out of it you should be fine until then

Just because the GM recommendation is 100k miles, take that with a grain of salt.

They may "work".... But it doesn't mean that new plugs wont deliver improved idle, and throttle response. Or that they will even come out (properly) after that length of time.

Same thing with dexcool. it gets quite cruddy after 70-80k miles, let alone 100-150.

I do plugs and coolant at about half of the "extended/long life" recommendation for plugs and coolant. IE 40-50k. helps make sure you wont have corrosion issues in your cooling system, and that the plugs dont weld themselves in the heads.

Plus, if you can do it yourself, its not that much more money to make sure your pride and joy is performing well.

I agree with you but the first tune up my car ever received was at 156k and the plugs looked brand new still and they were the original so if properly taken care of then from my experience GMs recommendations are pretty accurate

Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and bought new plugs and wires, haven’t installed them yet but plan to over the holiday. I guess I am more concerned with the old plugs freezing to the block, and trying to reduce the strain on the coils.

im personally a bit weary of gm's service intervals. they say clutch fluid should be fine for 100k miles. every car ive seen with the original fluid, one as low as 30k miles, had black fluid. my master cylinder actually failed at 48k miles because of the fluid.
