Longtubes worth it on a stock ls1?

So something flew up under the car and left a pretty big gash in my y-pipe; so I think to myself this is a great time to do my exhaust, longtube headers and all. Am I going to see much of a gain from getting long tubes with a mostly stock car, or should I just replace the y-pipe and use all the header money for other things?

I took a good look in the engine bay, and the stock manifolds almost seem like a manifold/header hybrid ... they didnt look very restrictive at all.

Thanks everyone

Yeah, it really wakes up the ls1 cars. Most anybody would recomend it. You could expect about 25 rwhp on your stock car.

What year is it? The 98 stock manifolds sucked at flowing and I am almost positive the 99s did as well. The newer ones tho flow decently for being a stock part.

Are you looking to be emissions legal?

If not, an ORY, some long tubes and a lid can get you some fairly nice gains for the money. Get SSRA or FTRA down the road and you will be in good shape as far as intake and exhaust go.

The cheapest route (Keeping in mind you may sacrifice a little bit of quality) for you to go would be:

Pacesetter or Flowtech LT headers painted black $270
ORY custom or pre-fab'd $125
any lid (all about the same price) $90

slap on a cheap cutout for 30 bucks, you will be right around $500
for a better flowing LS1! Gains could be seen around 40 hp but someone correct me if Im shooting to hi or lo.

hope this helps.

yeah, stock exhaust manifolds on the 01-02 cars were better, heard they are nearly as good as aftermarket shorty headers, but other than those years, the stock manifolds really suck.

although getting longtubes just in black is cheaper, i really wouldn't recommend that to anyone. if i was going to buy headers, i'd go out and get 'em ceramic coated...look better, keep heat down, and i believe with the lower heat they actually perform a bit better too.

lids are all basically the same - just a different name etched onto the top of 'em, price varies just a little....

you say your car is mostly stock....what's not stock about it?

you'd be surprised...the ls1 is quite cabable of flowing some pretty da** good air with just the help of a lid....

i wouldn't be weary about the benefits of opening up your exhaust....

2000 has the same manifold as the 01-02s
98-99s have the factory TES that don't flow too well.

Yes get the longtubes. They work extremly well on LS1 cars.

(*note* LS1 cars respond really well to anything that gets more air into the engine and exhaust out faster)

again I agree with lucas...if its in your budget, go for the ceramic coated. But if not, they will still work almost as well for a little while

i disagree, your 01 has decent manifolds and exhaust. i think for the money and maybe 20 hp LT's gain, you'll be better off spending $400 on a good pcm tuning. good luck.

Definately worth it. Not only for the 20ish ponies but they make a LS1 sound a lot meaner. I can't wait to get LT's on my car (after TC od course) so my car can sound a lot deeper/louder then it does now.

LT's will also allow your future mods to be more efficent (ie..more horsepower)

if he got a good tune now and then keep modding the car, he'd just have to get another tune.....i'd rather wait as long as possible to get a tune...like after heads/cam.....

Longtubes are the best bang for your buck. You won't get that seat of the pants feel from any other mod short of heads and cam (or nitrous). As others said, you'll get badass gains upfront and they support any other mod better. Deffinatly worth the money

My buddy is selling his car, we just took off his Coated pacesetter Longtubes and ORY. I think he wants $400 for everything (including o2 extensions) Let me know if you're intrested.

Oh, these are off an 02 btw, so that means there is no smog stuff. (Ex. no place for EGR or AIR, so if you had a 98-00 you would need to block off the stock stuff)
