I'm "Pinging"

Ok, here's the deal, i'm bad. I was putting low-grade gas in my LS1 to save money and now I have a ping. If I start using High-grade gas now, will the ping go away, or did I already do the damage? If I have already done damage, what needs to be done to fix it? Pistons? Valves? Also, will this ping result in a lose of power?

Thanx

Re: I'm "Pinging"

You should be fine if you throw some octane booster in there or fill up with premium. If that doesn't stop it, it's probably something worse than the pinging I'm thinking of.

I had the same problem. Just start using noting but premium (92 and up octane) and you should be fine.

Octane booster is trash. Just run higher octane fuel.

Re: I'm "Pinging"

Nobody told me to use Premium. I've been using regular for like 5 years, and I've never had a problem with any pinging.

Re: I'm "Pinging"

You probably have normal carbon buildup in the chambers, which kicks up your octane requirement. Search for "carbon" on how to deal with it..... and use premium. One broken ringland can take out your engine, why risk it.

Re: I'm "Pinging"

I had the exact same problem. 87 gas worked just fine until June when it heated up. After that i started pinging and misfiring like a biatch. Premium cleared it right up, immediately. Put some FI cleaner in there too for good measure.

By the way, in the manual, it says that "93 or better is recommended for best performance, however 91 or 87 may be used, but you may notice a slight loss in acceleration". They're very cryptic, because that tells me that i could run my car on regular all day long as long as i don't race anyone.

That does not say 93 only.

Re: I'm "Pinging"

Filling your tank with premium unleaded instead of regular unleaded will cost about $2.15 more, so it's worth the money to give your car the correct fuel it deserves.

When my Dad bought his Ram new in '98, he filled it with premium a few times and the engine pinged slightly. He discovered the owner's manual recommended regular unleaded (cheap stuff), switched grades and the truck runs smoothly.

I've always used the fluids GM recommends for my car and it's always run fine.

I agree, avoid octane boosters. They are usualy jam packed full of contaminates.

Just stick with 92-4 octane from the pump, no replacement for good octane.

Re: I'm "Pinging"

Try some GM top engine cleaner or Seafoam and see if that helps.

Yes, the manual states that you can run lower octanes. I ran some 86 octane when I was driving across New Mex and got my best MPG to date.
