If you are going to change out your shifter get a Pro 5.0, Ripper, or Kirban. One of these will net you the best results.

You do not hear much about the Kirban. How do they stack up?

I personally am not a fan of the Hurst (but that's just me). I like the Ripper or 5.0. I think they are great shifters. You're able to adjust the height of the 5.0 easier than the Ripper. At any rate, both have short throws. I have the Ripper on my SS.

Get the hurst with the short stick on it. Thats the best way to go! IMO

I've driven stock M6 cars, I've driven them with the Hurst, and I've driven them with the Pro 5.0. Out of those, the Pro 5.0 is by far the best, IMHO. The Hurst didn't seem all that much different from stock, if you ask me. Don't know about the Ripper, but people seem to like that one too. I'd pick the 5.0 or the Ripper before I'd pick the Hurst.
