High Mileage LS1's??? What to look for?

Considering a high mileage '98 TA, ~118,000 miles. Anyone out there know of the LS1's high mileage durability? What are common high mileage problems with the LS1? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellas.

Joe.

The LS-1 is an excellent motor, but with 118,000 miles its probably ready for a rebuild. I'd throw the guy a low-ball and see what he says. I'd say you could probably pick that up for about $9500-$11500(offer below 10k and just see what he says). Its hard to say what may/may not be wrong with the car.

On the other hand, if you were planning on rebuilding the LS1 anyways i'd buy it. IT's hard to find almost any LS1 car under 15k.

Good Luck,

belt tensioner. Drive it for a while and listen for a hissing noise. It comes and goes.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm actually leaving in the morning to check out the car. I'll let you know what I find out about it when I return. Thanks again.

I have a semi-high miliage LS1. 78XXX miles on it. A lot of the non-engine stuff seems to be going wrong. Just replaced a window motor, the other seems to be going. A lot of the interior lights just don't work (climate control ones, the 1 and four numbers on the radio, the lights around the bass control), weather stripping is wearing out, the leather wrapping around my gearbox is broken but that is all minor stuff. GM hasn't had a clue how to do interiors in a while so never cared (especially on the F-body)

I would consider rebuilding the engine at the milage. I got my car with 75XXX for 10500 from a dealer. I would ask for around 7-9.

man 70k is a long time for those crappy window motors to last. mine went at about 40k. to respond to the original post, gm says the target life on the LS1 is 300k. honestly the ls1 is a very strong engine if mantained well. if its an m6 i would worry about the tranny and clutch. people that buy f-bodies that are m6's love to drive them hard, its natural......unfortunatley you cant tell how much damage they have done to the tranny unless you take that sucker apart( unless you hear or feel something unusual while driving). my advice would honestly be to just find another car with lower miles, but if you insist on getting this one just look out for noises or things that just dont feel right when you test drive the car.

By the ease in which I unscrewed the bolts on the door panel, it had to have been replaced before hand, so don't feel bad

I saw an LS1 with 200+ miles the other day on ebay.

A rebuild?

My dad's 305 in his '84 Caprice SW was great up until the time he traded it in with about 185K miles, he just did regular fluid changes and took care of it.

With that said and today's better engine technology, I don't think an LS1 should need a rebuild at 118K unless the guy went to the track every week.

I second that! Even if it was driven hard, as long as it was maintained properly it shouldn't need a rebuild yet.......just have someone you trust check it out before buying.......mine has 93,000 miles and runs as good as new still............All hail the mighty LS1!!

Thanks for all the replies fellas, but turns out the car is a bit too rough my taste. Still ran good, but needed too much attention. Thanks again.

Just save a little extra cash and get a cherry car, you'll definitely be glad you did instead of a fixer-upper.

like the others said, don't worry about the engine, just consider the 100k milage abuse on other components of the car. Wouldn't do it if you want to keep it stock or if its your daily driver. Windows and interior as well as speakers like to go out
