Unhappy Help needed - clunking sound

Hi,

I have a problem with a very loud clunking/rattling sound. It happens when I drive over a bump or through a pothole with only the right rear wheel.

My car: '00 Camaro SS Convertible, 25000 miles. BMR tubular SFCs welded on 2 years ago. SLP Level 1 suspension mounted this sprin, including the reinforced LCAs and PHR with poly bushings.

I checked the LCAs and the PHR and all the bolts are tight. The wheel nuts seem to be tight too though ill go and retorque them to be on the safe side.

I also removed everything from the trunk and took off the windstopper to make sure none of these causes the problem.

The sound is so loud that I wonder whether the car is safe to drive right now. I noticed a small clacking sound from the same area when I drive off forward after backing up.

The car has been at the dealer's twice for rearend problems, once they told me the seal had leaked and the rearend was shot and then only filled it with oil again and claimed there was no damage after all.

I also have a low rhythmic clicking sound when coasting in gear which also seems to come from the same general area but was there more or less from day one.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

check that, and check for loose bolts on the lcas and pan hard rod. If it does it when you slow down maybe a wheel bearing...

Car is going on the lift tomorrow or Saturday.

Ill check

- Shock mounts
- LCA and PHR bolts
- Exhaust system

Is there any way to check a wheel bearing without taking the whole brake assembly off?

I'd check those LCA bolts again... after installing my BMR boxed SFC I tightened them down "good" but got banging, so I smoked them down, still banging.. I looked up the torque and it's like 54ft/lbs or something that = mad gorilla smoking torque

I was afraid I'd break the bolt or something but I tightened them as totally tight as I could humanly get them and now there's no banging.

A new banging started later but I found it. I have a Hooker cat back(that I love) and I found it banging agenst some sheet metal next to the right exhaust tip.. I'll have to play with it later.

From what you are saying it sounds like the lower control arm. I installed boxed control arms and SFC's and the same day heard a clunk when going over a good bump. So I assume it is the LCA on the pass side. I have to get it looked at too now. Since all I changed in my car at the time was the SFC's and LCA's it has to be one of them. BTW mine is also the right rear wheel area a little forward almost sounds like it is at the rear of the pass door. Would like to know what your problem is so I can check mine for same also. Good Luck!

I had some noise coming from the rear end. Found out the threads on my adj. panhard rod were stripped. If you went with the BMR adjustable panhard rod, check to make sure it's still together and holding strong. I figured my problem is somewhat unique, but it never hurts to check.

Update:

I tightened the left shock mount bolt and found one of the exhaust system hangers on the left side of my SLP dual/dual _missing_.

The whole assembly is missing, there are just the holes in the trunk bottom the hanger normally mounts to and the piece welded to the exhaust, so the whole body side of the assembly and the rubber piece are AWOL. From the way it looks I think they forgot to put it on at SLP.

Ill order a new piece and see whether the sound is still there.

Chris
