which heads
which heads
Which heads from patriot are better for a LS1 the 5.3L LS1 style or the LS6 style. Whats the difference between the two. I am looking at the stage III heads or are those too much for a 228-230ish cam?
LS6 style.
Stage 3 is too large for stock bore.
LS1 is just ported LS1 heads. 5.3 are just ported 5.3L truck heads, they also have mildly ported LS6 heads, but the LS6 style are 035 castings they weld the chambers and cut back out to what ever size you want and port to their specs.

if i am correct, the 5.3's will raise your compression. other than that i dont know the hell i have them other than tsp told me it was the best combo for the price range i was looking at, at the time to go with my cam.
I'd look into a 224/228 .581/.588 110+2 LSA cam on XE-R lobes. Match it up with a nice set of heads and it should put you over the 400rwhp mark without having to spin it up too high. I've seen some 5.3's that flow great numbers when ported out. Best thing you could do is talk to one of the shops and see what they've had experience with.
are you talking about my combo or SSpdmon's cam?
or would these heads be better with the compition valve job and the 918 springs?

Too big of a valve in relationship to the cylinder size makes the edge of the valve real close to the cylinder wall which blocks the incoming air so that in reality a bigger valve cylinder head with better flow numbers can perform worse than a smaller valve cylinder head with slightly inferior looking flow numbers. Yes I know that they flow the heads on a cylinder of the same size but that's an open tube not a motor cylinder with a piston in the bottom and all else that's going on in there.
When you are looking at heads, cam it is all in the combination. The best performing will have the cam ground to match the flow of the heads and in some cases even the intake is flowed to the heads. Big #'s on a head don't always make for the most streetable combination. You might get a big HP # but without any bottom end torque. Check out the dyno section on some of the forums and maybe even pm some of the people that have posted their combinations so that you can get an idea of drivability.
head selection is more about budget (springs used and valves used) than anything else. The larger valves (2.00 to a 2.02 to a 2.055) will make more power but I would skip the 2.08 valves unless going with a bigger bore engine.
You have to watch cam selection and check P/V clearance also.
You can stick with a 230 duration cam and make TONS of TQ in the mid range and with a good set of heads, still ahve it pull to 6700-6800 RPM.
Here is a sound clip of my LE2 "no fly cut" cam and LE2 heads on an LS1. It is about 230 duration.

Plenty radical to please anyone wnating a choppy idle and enough low end and mid range TQ to work with 3.42 gears and 6 speed or 2800 stall. As anyone knows, the car will be faster with more stall (3600- 4400) and a lil more gear (3.73/4.11).
Just go to Eportworks.com and click on the LS1 page to see what parts you get for what $$$.
