header and Y pipe question

I'm on the verge of ordering long tubes (either Pacesetter or those Hedmans) and was wanting to know if the 3" Y pipe you have to get will fit on the stock intermediate pipe. It seems alot of people are doing this to save some $ over getting a catbak. I know you'll need an adaptor pipe to fit the 2.75" stock intermediate pipe, but could this still be a bolt on procedure? None of the shops around here will touch a vehicle with the smog equipment removed.

i'm not sure what you mean by "doing this to save some $ over getting a catbak"...

most guys i know are still hooking headers/ypipe up to an aftermarket exhaust.

and if i remember correctly, my Flowtech Ypipe had the collector that was 2.75" to match that stock pipe...i cut the reduced piece off to bolt to my 3" system

I just thought of getting headers with a Y pipe and just getting a Flowmaster muffler for sound and a cutout to put behind the Y pipe. We'll see though. I'm a little torn between doing this and looking into Hedman's new LT's and kit for LS1's. I also just found out about a shop that's opening up next week that has a dyno and does tuning, and alot of other performance related stuff. They also are getting a mandrel bender to do exhaust work with so I may end up just getting LT's and driving over there to have them build me a custom mandrel bent system.

Re: header and Y pipe question

i see what you mean now.

if you wanted to stick with the stock exhaust, i would install the headers, and ypipe, and run some 3" pipe from the Ypipe collector to the cutout before the axle. then weld the cutout to the stock pipiing into the muffler of your choice.
this way you are taking advantage of the 3" pipe when using the cutout (1/4" is a decent increase in flow) but still are saving money with retaining the stock rear parts.

you can get 4ft of straight 3" tubing for cheap from summit or jegs or just have the exhaust shop do it.
