Got A Tick In My 99

Cars stored for the winter..but went out and started it up today..to let her run..well after it warmed up..its got a "ticking" noise to it. I put my head to the engine..and it seems to be only on the drivers side. THeres no tick on the pass side. Took it out for a spin after it warmed up..and have no loss of power or anything..Car still runs strong. Any ideas? Maybe a half collapsed lifter or something?

I'm no mechanic but here goes. But it sounds like bent push rods you're describing. This would have happened as a result of a 3 - 2 shift or any other unexpected downshift. Then bouncing the engine off the rev limiter. Do you remember doing this before storing it?

I would also mention piston slap since your car was stored for the winter. But that should go away after warming up.

Perhaps we can get some more opinions on how to isolate the problem.

It could be something as bad as bent pushrods, or something as simple as a shot AIR check valve.

It's hard to tell based on what you've described...

same here in my 2000 z28, this is normal sound in LS1s engines.... after awhile the sound will disappear due to heat and lub oil...

i to thought bent pushrods..but if i had a bent pushrod..im sure i could tell..the car runs, idles, drives, performs just the same. Ive talked to a few mechanics i work with..and they said youd know if you had a bent pushrod.

I heard a"ticking" sound on my passengers side of the block and it turned out to be a bad knock sensor.

howd you end up testing that out? cuz i only hear the tick on the drivers side. nothing on the passengers side.

chpmnsws6 Jan 22, 2004 11:28 PM

could it be an exhaust leak? my leak cuases ppl to think i have a bad lifter (ppl that are new in the game) but the oldies always correct em

It's a belt.

There are two knock sensors, one per cylinder head, I took it to autozone and they connected it to their computer dyagnostics, and thats what it read failed passengrs side knock sensor.

The knock sensors are in the valley on an LS1, under the intake. NOT in the block on each side like an LT1.
