Me thinks you need english lessons. I dont understand what you're asking.

I think he wants to know if he should buy GM pushrods and slp rockers? I think he also went through a light and took his car to a shop.

psychocabbage Dec 1, 2003 01:19 PM

my take was that he thinks GM is cheap since he over reved his car, bent some pushrods and is now wondering if SLPs kit is a good setup.

z28chrizz Dec 1, 2003 02:48 PM

GM Cheap? Yes. Absolutely, their build quality is amongst the worst in the automotive industry. Incorrect panel gaps leave the factory, because they dont affect the function of the car. Mold lines on interior plastic stick around because they hope you wont notice. Neither of these would pass as acceptable on my roomates VW, however

With regards to your pushrods? NO. They are designed as the weak link in the system. If they dont bend, what does? Rockers? Valve retainers? Or maybe the valve just drops into the compustion chamber. I am usually the last to credit GM with good engineering, but that is a smart weak link in the system.

As far as SLP getting more HP from their rockers... sure anything with a roller setup will remove parasitic losses. Is GM cheap for not putting them in there? Not really. 90% of the motors that roll off the factory floor will never need the additional 18 hp, and this is a major cost cutting part. Cutting the power there and in other places allows GM to use a weaker rear axle, and save cost again. Think about it, GM has the ability to use mandrel bent longtubes on all the Ls1 cars, roller rockers, a 500 hp clutch and a solid 12 bolt and so on.... But be prepared to ante up 40k for a base Z 28.
Its not cheap, its cost engineering... big difference

If you're referring to a V8 F-Body, there's only so much that can be done on a car that offers that much performance which is going to be sold for $23,000. You have to cut corners somewhere.

GM's build quality is not among the worst in the industry. Japanese car companies had to deal with rusting bodies in the past, European car companies quality is not that much better than GM's seeing how their cars are double the price. By no means am I brand loyal to GM, but their products have never left my family or I stranded on the side of the road, ever; they hold their resale value, their styling is great, they get good gas mileage, and I could go on...

I understand that.... that was the whole gist of my post. Its the fact that they cut corners on things that are no longer acceptable in the industry. Panel gaps... the cars are robotically assembled... they should be perfect. Hell VW/Audi has 3mm exterior gaps... try and get that on a GM product... Interior mold lines... try new molding techniques...

At the same time, my roomates 18k jetta 1.8T has all of those things and some modest performance.

Imports HAD a problem with rust. Now they are as good as most domestics. Then again my buddies rusty 87 toyota is still running at 190k...

Stranded me? Never. Never said they werent relaible either.

Resale value... unless we are talkin chevy trucks they are horrible... Try and find a nice used civic... then find a nice used cavalier... betcha that civic which sold for 1000 more new will be selling for 2500-3k more for comparable condition cars.

Styling... opinions... everones got at least one

Gas mileage... depends 99% on the driver but if you were to check the EPA mileage leaders of 2003 they were pretty much all imports...

Dont get me wrong... I love my camaro, and my jeeps and all the things that go with ownint them. I just wish that my car with 26k on the odo didnt squeak like a styrofoam cooler over every bump. My roomate has 2x the miles on the jetta and it is solid as a rock.

Honestly the reason they have to cut corners is 1) UAW and 2) the huge cost of supporting 50+ years of retirees with current profits. Those are the ugly truths about the US auto industry that noone likes to talk about.

I am very brand loyal to GM....
... for many reasons. Two of my favorites:
1. Dodge
2. Ford

Keep in mind, my whole family loves cars as much as I do. We baby them....

Why not Dodge?
My experience with Dodge: (recent --> not so recent)
Mom and Dad buy a brand new 2003 Durango. Beautiful vehicle.... Bad customer service.
Interior, the rear leather seat has a small tear in it. No problem, right? Not so. They take their brand new car into the shop to get them to fix it.... two weeks later they get it back, only to see that the dealership had put a leather patch on the brand new seat instead of replacing it. (very angry) My parents left it there, and strongly requested that the seat be replaced. two more weeks go by, the dealership calls them in. What do they now find? A low quality leather seat cover on the rear seat. It was loose, and mismatched. Needless to say, they were angry again. They left it there for another week and a half. Finally they got the new seat in, and replaced it. No compensation for making a payment on a vehicle that they were not even able to drive for over a month.
Horrible gas mileage on an underpowered V-8. Enough said. Welcome to Dodge world...
Previous Dodge : 99 Dodge Ram with the extended warranty (V8- 5 spd) Brand new vehicle. After driving the truck for around 1000 miles, the clutch plate shatters. (average country driving, not even harsh city use) Dodge tells my parents that they will not replace it, as it is a wearable item. $600 down the drain on the new Dodge. 2 years later, the AC goes out. (my 92 firebird still blew cold until last year (all original equipment, minus the heater core) Luckily it was covered under the warranty that they had purchased.
Previous Dodge: 94 Dodge Dakota (V-6, 5spd.)
Great truck, bad gas mileage. Nothing really wrong with it.
Previous Dodge: Back in the 80's we had a Van. It was pretty new when we got it, Broke down all the time.

Why no Ford?:
Bro's brand new Excursion Limited... Top of the line, every option...decked out.
Brings it home, and after a few weeks of driving it, lights start going out on the dash, and a fuse blows... No problem, Ryan puts a new fuse in... After all, crap happens. Well, it blows a day or so afterwards, so he takes it in to the dealer.
Dealer screws around for a couple of days and calls him back. Basically the wiring harnass was supposed to be braced to the firewall from the factory. It wasn't and it had scraped along the metal braces until the wires shorted out.
The dealership didn't bother taking his dash apart, they just zip-tied it all together and sent him on his way.
All unrelated , Within 2 years, he had door lock motors, and a window motor go bad. 3 months ago, he got in and put it in drive. The column shifter broke off (at the plastic end).
He has also had to replace ball joints, and has some strange noises in differnt areas of the vehicle.
Otherwise, it has run good and has a really nice leather interior.

Besides that, we all know that mustangs are a sad excuse for competition for the L98, Lt-1 or LS-1 (stock vs. stock, year vs. year)

To speak of why I am GM loyal, None of the cars that my parents have bought new (starting with an 91 Chevrolet Silverado, and about 1 a year since avg. of 40k mi per year) have had any problems in design, or unusual problems. Virtually maintanence free.
91, 92 Silverado
93 Trans Am
94 GMC Jimmy
95 Silverado
97 Camaro RS
99 Siverado
00 Camaro

Why did they get a dodge? I have no earthly idea.

For myself,
@ 115k mi. My grand am started having trouble going into gear.
@ 120k mi. I sold the camaro, trouble free, due to body damage (moron in a parking lot)
@ 185k mi. I retire the firebird to a project car, perfectly drivable. It needs a new AC system, and a passenger side door lock mechanism (I screwed it up trying to get into the car), and some minor body work.

@ 65k mi. The 99 Z runs perfectly, bone stock, shifts smooth, burns no oil, and looks great.

So, vs. domestic makers... I'd take GM any day of the week.
Vs. Imports.... I really am not a big fan. I know MPG, and some are durable, but to me, they don't feel as good to drive... (Supra's, RX7's, 300zx's, excluded)

This is all to say that I am a die-hard chevrolet fan.... Thank you and goodnight.

lol, all that to say that GM's are nice, and my entire post had nothing to do with the original post..

SLP setup is good.. although if your rockers are fine, why not get a more agressive cam to get the more lift and duration instead? Then get the pushrods and springs and stuff that will match the cam..

well, the stock pushrods are great the specs they are designed for.. obviously an overrev isn't part of their design sepcs.

as others have said, if that doesn't bend, somethng else has to give.. unless you have a superstrong valvetrain.. but then you tradeoff with accelerated wear and hp loss.. extra stiff springs to hold up against ultra ultra high rpms will wear your lifter and lobes, rockers, etc from the pressure they exert.. let alone they will probably be made of more brittle materials.. and you would be losing hp from parisitic losses beacuse more energy would be exerted from moving the heavier stronger valvetrain around... which would be a complete waste if its built to survive a 9000 rpm misshift when your only looking to hit 6200 elsewise.
