Free factory Cats!

Hey guys I just joined the board a couple of months ago and I thought I post some interesting info. Sometime around March - April the INOP pump on my car went out or so the dealer said and they wanted about $350 to fix it, so I said no, I'd look around first. About two weeks later I notice a loud rattleing comeing from under my car right about where the door is so I took it back. Comes to find out the Cats got fried from not having the INOP pump. So I talked to a guy at Exhuast pro (hell of a guy) and he told me about GM's 8yr. 80000 mile warrantly on the Cats. So, turns out, I got the whole job done for nothing... absolutely free. If I'd been writing the check it would have cost me $1400. Thanks GM. http://web.camaross.com/bb/wink.gif

Yes, GM will replace your cats for free with the 8yr/80000mi if they still look in good condition. I had the guts of one of my cats get rattled loose from the accident my car was in, and since it looked like I had "modded" it they wouldn't replace it for free.

Yah, the 8yr/80,000 deal is federal law, and they have to fix any exhaust or computer problems on an unmodded car. I have a busted cat right now, and it sounds like @$$, but I'm not sure if they'll replace it because I have a cut-out.

The INOP pump is a pump that pumps fresh air into your exhaust. We the government changed the emissions laws, exhaust emissions had to be clearer. So, GM found a loop hole that would not kill the horsepower of the car...they just used a pump (i.e. INOP pump) to pump in fresh air and thus make the emissions thinner and therefore pass gov. standards. http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif

Yeah, I guess so. The computer analysis I got from the dealer labeled it as an INOP pump so that is what I thought it was called.
Sorry for the confusion.

INOP means INOPERATIVE, so "INOP Pump" means a "broken" pump. http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif

Will they replace it if it is just common wear and tear? Like the sulfur smell that you get from them under acceleration when they are starting to get too old?

GM has a 3yr. 36000 mile warranty on the AIR pump that's it, sorry.

I'm not so sure that is accurate - my understanding was that emmission control equipment is covered for 5/50.

Look in the owners manual - there is a seperate handout that lists the warranty for various items.

With any luck for you, I am correct ! http://web.camaross.com/bb/tongue.gif

I have a 00' ss I am the second owner so I do not have the warranty info. I understand its still under warranty because it only has 11k miles. How or where do I go to find out the remaining warranty info?

I looked on the Chevy web site - not much info there, I am afraid.

Best I can tell you is to run by the local dealer. Did you not get an owners manual w/ your car ? It seems like the sheet I am referring to is in a pocket in the manual.
