Post Dumb Question. Is the 5.7 V8 a 350?

Eh, I'm 19, and have no ideas about the Cubic Inches or whatnot... Is the 5.7L V8 in my SS a '350'?

Cool

5.7L is technically a 350 cid engine, but the LS1 comes at 346.xx cubic-inches to be exact. It's a 3.9" bore with a 3.625" stroke. That would come to right around 5.65L, but GM still badges it as a 5.7L just because it's familiar to the public.

Always round up ... it makes it sound better.

Seriously ..... he's right. It's a 346, but nobody calls it that. Everyone is familiar with a 350, but if you said you had a 346, people would look at you and say, "HUH?"

Exclamation

I don't call it a "350" because it has nothing in common with the SBC 350, plus the cubes (IMHO) should and can not be rounded up by 4 cubes. I refer to it as an LS1, 5.7L, or a 346CID. As do most all the locals (So-Cal).

Here's the math:

Bore: 9.9 cm
Stroke: 9.2 cm

There are 2.54 cm/inch.

Displacement is:

3.14159*(9.9/2)^2*9.2*8 or 5665.5 cu cm

Given 2.54 cm/in, there are 2.54^3 or 16.387 cu cm per cu in.

Dividing 5665.5/16.387 yields 345.7 cu. in

Even the 350 is not technically a 5.7 is it? Isn't it 5.74?

I got into a BIG argument with the parts guys at the local chevy dealership a couple weeks ago about this. They asked me if I had a 350 or V6. I answered "a 346". The chevy parts guy tried to tell me that GM doesn't make a 346.

GM isn't as bad as Ford. The 302 is actually a 4.9 liter.

Cool

GM wants to stay with what people notice and recognize. In 1970, the 396 was bored .030", and all of the 396's from '70 on were actually 402 cid. However, GM kept the badging the same because it wouldn't sound as good as "SS396".
