Difference in sound...
Difference in sound...
I just drove my buddy's Trans Am that we put headers on this sunday. The car is identical to mine mod for mod...except he got the Texas Speed Rumbler exhaust, while mine is the SLP loudmouth with a dynomax bullet in place of the resonator.
His car is only about 2/3 as loud as mine. WHY??????
I think that we were both under the impression that they would sound almost identicial. Could it be the difference in metals..i.e. the SLP system is stainless steel?
Anyhow, his car sounds sweet, I almost wish I had that system on my car...but mine definitely sounds like its got more ***** to it. His sounds about as loud as my car did when it had stock manifolds, cats, and the loudmouth.
Anyhow, anybody got a reason as to why they sound so much different?

Re: Difference in sound...
but.. in reality... he's got one muffler per 4 cylinders... even though it's an "X" pipe... I have the loudmouth with monster heads and a huge cam... the cops are pissed at me... I love it though... I'll get the Texas system as soon as I can afford it though, for sure.

Nobody said anything about duals
I've heard it has to do with the placement of the muffler/resonator. I doubt the metals will have a profound affect on the sound.
On the LoudMouth, it's closer to the y-pipe and on the Rumbler it's right before the bend where it goes over the axle. Before your current setup, your exhaust was basically the same as mine is now, but yours was louder, probably for the reason stated above. Your roommate and I more or less have the same exhaust but I have a y-pipe (he doesn't) and he has resonated tips (I don't), which is probably why mine sounds deeper and his is just plain louder.
Capisce?

Re: Difference in sound...
I didn't realize the placement of the muffler in the Rumbler system was different than where I have my muffler now. Either way, it can't be more than a couple inches in difference. I don't see how that can make such a difference in sound. The sound quality is the same, but the quantity is way different. Significantly less on the Trans Am.
Oh, and my roomate's car is not the Trans Am in question here...
And Yes, Texas Speed makes a true dual system also called the Rumbler, but that is not the system I am talking about here...obviously a true dual system would sound completely different than my set up.

Re: Difference in sound...
The Loudmouth uses a resinator, which is just an expansion chamber. The Rumbler has a Dynomax bullet muffler, which is perforated tube surrounded by steel wool packing. It will quiet things down a bit more.

Ummm...not trying to get pissy w/anybody, this whole thread was just for the sole purpose of finding an answer...not gonna change the set up on either car. My car is plenty loud as is...
I have the 18" bullet muffler.
Mine is CLEARLY louder. They sound similar at low RPM's...but when under WOT in his car, it sounds like my car did w/just the loudmouth. Under WOT in my car, sounds like the end of the world....lol.

Re: Difference in sound...
Who cares? The answer is you have differant setups. Thats like me asking why is my car with a Borla XR1 muffler louder then one with a Flowmaster muffler. Because they are differant.
