Descreening..is it worth it?

Wanted to know if descreening would cause any problems. I'm going to do the egr mod and throttle bypass this weekend.

I took the screen off my 95 Z and drove two years without any problems whatsoever.

I will, however, keep it on from now on. Just makes me feel a bit more secure. MAF is such a thing that you don't want anything to mess it up and if it requires keeping the screen, then so be it.

Removing it will do absolutely nothing to your performance anyway.

people have had mixed results with maf mods...whether swapping to a larger one...maf ends...porting stock...taking out screen theyve all had mixed results so id rather just keep the stocker on...it is an exposed piece of electronics that id rather not mess with but thats me...some have gained some have lost power...but like what 322hp said 3hp...is it worth having problems in the future? Maf's aint cheap to replace but TMO.

just stating the facts. everyone asks for dyno proven results. well here they are, and people still scoff at it.

and BTW, to this day, i have come across NOBODY who has had problems from descreening (unless your pliars slip and you screw up the MAF). someone out there prove me wrong.

and we're talking about de-screening only. changing MAF's, porting MAF's, etc, now that's a different story.

Yup... I got 292hp on my first run and 297 on the second run 5 minutes after the first one. Linky.

5rwhp without doing anything. Pretty cool! Then again... I lost 1rwhp over the second pull on the third one...

Descreening the MAF is as beneficial and debtable as the TB bypass.

Your MAF. Your call. You do what ever you think is best for you and your car.

and i got 193-188-194 out of my 89 firebird in 01' at the east coast nats when werx had their dyno out...and the car sure as hell didnt change between the 3 runs that were within 8 mins from first to last...dyno #'s can change within a few hp from run to run...so that could just be a glitch in the system. JMO

wow, you did 3 pulls??? hey grnz, as incredible as it may seem, you're not the only one on the board who knows there's some variation in a dyno test. that's why i did 3 pulls with screen in, then 3 pulls with screen out. 3 RWHP was the diff between max screen in and max screen out. and guess what, all 3 screen out pulls were higher than any screen in pulls. sounds better than your "do nothing" mod, since your third pull was lower than your second pull.

there's no convincing you guys. you already have your minds made up. i'm sure you'll find something wrong with my experimental method explained above. can't wait to hear it.

magyver, go ahead and pull your screen. just be careful to not damage the MAF sensors in the process and you'll be ok.

Even if you got a couple HP, many people have spoted
debris on the screen so is a few more ponies worth
**** going into the internals, thats your call, me I wouldn't
even consider it. Yes I realize the Z06 doesn't have it but
thats a different induction design. I error on the side of
caution. Hell, I won't even do a CAI cause mine is a daily
driver and I'm not cleaning my filter every month and
risking sucking in water.

if you're getting debris up to the MAF screen, you've got some serious air filter or lid problems...

Check out this months GMHTP magazine, they did 5 free mods on a 99 TA including descreened MAF, TB bypass, and d.i.y. port and polish along with cutting a larger hole in the air box. 10 HP gain and something like 10 ft pounds of torque. I'm going to do it this weekend but don't have a good dyno for F-bodies here in the UK. later,

Travis

ATAP the car first. Descreening leans out the engine a bit which will make more power sometimes, unless you are running a tad lean from the factory. 99 and 00 cars seem to run a bit lean from the factory so descreening on those years may not be a good idea.

A lot of it comes from using smooth bellows that
don't allow enough movement and pull on the lid.
