clunk in drivetrain, rear?

When shifting and sometimes on bumpy roads. I removed the spare tire and jack and the problem went away for 15 mins iif driving then came back. I heard that out cars have a certain amount of backlash in the drivetrain but not sure if I have something loose or what. I tried pushing the backend of the car up and down and hear notta.

I have the same noises, usually when shifting at slower speeds and first putting it into gear. i wouldn't worry to much about it. Mine has seemed to do it from new. CAn always take to dealer and have them check it out. Or do what I do, put the windows down, the radio up, and hit about 5k on the tack and just have fun.

Do you notice this "clunking" when you're cruising down the road (30 - 50 mph roughly) if you go lightly on and off the gas (I mean 1/4 throttle maybe, then off the gas, then 1/4 throttle). I find my car has a noticeable "clunk" sound when I cruise under light loads, and if I just give it throttle lightly, or it'll clunk when I slow down for corners, then take off from the corner. My car has done this since new I think (only has ~23,000 miles on it) and I think the noise comes from the worm gears moving inside the Torsen posi unit..................I'm not 100% though.

IMO, unless something is visibly loose or falling off (or a universal joint is bad or something) I don't think there's anything wrong. Even the service rep at the dealership acknowledged the noise to me, but had one of the mechanics (who owns a Camaro) check it out, and he said that it was "normal".

HTH.

It's been doing this since new, only 4800 miles now. It must be normal since it hasn't gotten worse. I just need to get rid of my stock catback and get a borla or corsa so I won't hear it. I ordered some b quiet material to quiet the rear road noise. Thanks for the info.

I just got back from the dealer with the same problem but they said it was normal too. They did replace the pinion seal though b/c it was leaking.
