Cam question...

I need help choosing a cam? I've read just about everythig on here dealing with cams but nothing has helped me choose one, unless I mised something. I have a 2000 Camaro SS w/ 6sp. manual trans. About all that is done to it are free mods MTI clear lid, smooth intake hose, B&M ripper, ZO6 clutch. When I upgrade the cam I'm planning on Pasesetter LT's w/offroad Y, Borla cat back, LS6 intake w/egr delete, 100 shot of NOS, SFC's, STB, and 4:10 gears all at the same time. I'm not engine smart so someone is going to be installing this stuff for me, the body is my thing. I know alot of F-Body fanatic's locally and even some are members on here and one of my friends was saying that a 224/224 530 w/114lsa would be a good street/strip cam. I know texas speed has decient cam packages. I'm not looking for a ridiculously fast car and it might see a trip to the strip twice a year. Mainly I just want a car that will prerform well and at idle you can here that there is cam in it and still get somewhat decient gas mileage.

Any help would be nice thanks.

Its an old grind based on an old cam profile, but it is very tried and does make decent power. Check out the 224R @ TSP for a newer profile. Basicly you're looking at the most common of cam grinds. Is there better? Yes. Is there worse? Yes.

My advice is to read this:
http://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=327734

Then call TSP and talk to them about your goals. Since you know you're going to spray, why not optimize it with a cam ground for it? Plus with 4.10's you might as well look at more duration to maximize the higher RPM range.

I also don't see any mention of getting a tune.

I forgot to mention the tune. And as for the 4:10's I was initially going to with 3:73's but the same friend that mentioned the cam said that the gearing in the manuals (the trans itself)were higher than autos and that it would be equivalent to an auto with 3:73's. But like I like I said I don't know engines.

I read the attachment, and it gives me alot more insight into cams. I had no idea all the different things u have to take in consideration. When I'm ready to do this I will probably call TSP and talk to them. Thank you.

i think the 224 will be a very good choice for you.

should yield a solid 375rwhp after tuning

I'd go with the 228R if I were you...

With a cam and a 100 shot, you're going to need much more clutch than the LS6. Also, with a 4.10 gear and 26" tires, it's possible that you might run out of gear with a cam + 100 shot.

With that being said, I'd recommend the Futral Motorsports F-13, which rarely makes under 400 rwhp cam-only on 6-speed cars (provided you have full bolt-ons)

If going with the F-13, would I have to do a head swap or PP my stock ones. Or would I be ok just leaving them alone, because I don't really have the funds to shell out for heads. I forgot to add that I will probable be switching to a 1.8 rocker.

stock heads are more than adequate for that cam. will it make max power...NO...but it will still make plenty.

Kraest's quote of 400hp was at the rear wheels...with stock heads.

and as for the 1.8 rockers...vast majority of cams on the market are not compatible with the higher ratio rockers.

besides, the point of the rockers is to increase lift...which is pointless when you can just install a cam with high lift. most moderate cams these days can be had with new .600" lift.

Stock heads work fine. Like Teke said, the aftermarket rocker would be a waste of money or possibly not even work on a cam swap due to PtV clearance.

Thanks for info on the on the rockers. I'll loose that idea. Like I said previously my buddy that's telling me all this is kind of an asshat, everything he builds him self blows up.
