c5!!!
c5!!!
Now I'm in trouble, I just saw a 99 M6 C5 at my dealer who always hooks me up for 25g with 45k on it. Black on black, all options, full warranty 3/3000. Hardtop though but I think I can deal; I'll just make it an all out speed car
. This would be an appropriate replacemant for my red beast I think.

IMO... guys who drive C-5 Vettes look like they're on their way to pick up some Viagra... mainly because a C-5 is so expensive that only retired guys can afford them. I'd stay with the red SS... Camaros are a young mans toy

Get the Corvette. I'd hold out for a targa, but if you can deal with the hardtop, jump all over it. You won't regret it.
I wouldn't say vastly insuperior... the engines are nearly identical. A few mods to a LS1 and you could waste a C5, for a lot less money. Do enough and you could even waste a Z06. The only real thing the Vette has going for it is a better suspension and lighter weight... to me the cost out-weighs the gains. Not to mention insurance... even if you could afford the payments the insurance would kill you.

But couldn't you say that about most any car? Take a $2000 honda civic and drop a engine in for 2k and maybe a SC and get a car that can beat a TA/SS for less then the cost of the LS1. But at the end of the day you still have just a honda civic in the driveway (fast or not). Of course an SS is a very cool and respected car but IMO I put the corvette one class above it.
I think the corvette is just a nicer car. Not much faster, but "cooler" for lack of a better term. I'd get the vette if you can afford the insurance. My dream car is a lamborgini but my reality is I'll probably get as high as a corvette do to financial restraints (LoL). I agree that you should not get the vette if speed is all you are concerned with. If however your like me then I'd get the C5 for the prestige and sharp looks of a corvette.
No flame intended, just my 2 cents.

Chris
Is insuperior a word?
Inferior? That's the opposite of superior.
For me, insurance would have been over $100 more per 6 months with a Corvette (through Progressive). Why? Maybe it was because I was comparing a 2002 Camaro with a 1999 model Corvette Hardtop...cars that are priced similarly. It was weird...older cars seemed to cost more to insure. I was quoted a lower rate for an '03 'vette than I was for a '99.
Corvettes also cost more to repair than Camaros do. That's factored into insurance rates, I believe.
There are a bunch of used C5s with similar miles for 20-25K. I thought long and hard about buying one, but eventually decided that I didn't want that many miles to start with on a car that I plan to drive daily for 4 years. I bought my '02 Z28 instead.

As far as styling goes, that's all opinion. I like the looks of the SS, the Firebird, and the Corvette equally.
Chris: Now that you pointed that out, I don't think insuperior is a word, either.
Thats pretty funny, I've been deciding between a z28/TA/WS6/SS and a Mustang GT/Cobra. Well I just bought a C5 for a killer price. Got the thing for $19,500, its a 1998 C5 coupe- black/black leather m6 w/ 14k miles, YES 14k miles.
Im proud of myself on the deal.
Ok, insurance, yes its cheaper than a Z28 and its about the same as a Mustang GT. My insurance company won't insure a Vette unless your 21, well Im 21 and I thought the insurance would be insane, but it seems there are a few good reasons a Vette is cheaper:
1. 21 or older to insure (atleast my company), means no teenage crazy drivers getting killed.
2. There have to be less Vettes wrecked than Camaros or Mustangs, especially with older drivers being the "usual" C5 owner.
3. The Vette is the safest american sportscar made.
Thats all I can think of.

You mean you wasted everyone's time helping you decide between a Camaro and Mustang only to walk away with an awesome C5 for cheaper than what I just paid for my SS and with less miles to boot?!
Gawd damn you!
Heh no really, that is an absolute steal. Un-freakin-believable I am so jealous.
