Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
I just bought a 1998 cayenne red camaro z28 with the 1LE option for $10,300. It only has 38,000 miles on it and is completely stock. I was wondering what the best exhaust would be to put on it for the HP gains. I want the exhaust to be my first mod, (not including headers yet) and I don't want it to be extremely loud. But I do want it to have a nice tone. Any suggestions? Also, did I get a pretty good price for this Z28? It is a true 1LE, but I don't know how much this would add to the value. And what kind of quarter mile times could I expect out of a stock Z?

Re: Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
I like my Flowmaster cat-back for its SOUND QUALITY, but they're allegedly not the best for HP gains?
I've heard a lot of good things about the Magnaflow cat-back, in terms of power gains, sound, quality and price
.
There are (obviously) other brands out there, but I don't think there's a single brand that makes way more HP with their cat-back system than anyone else
. If you're looking to make real power, the cat-back isn't your answer. That will be found closer to the engine
(headers, intake, engine work, etc

if you are keeping stock manifolds and cats for a while, i HIGHLY reccomend the magnaflow. the sound is amazing and it is very free flowing...2/3rds of the exhaust is directed out without even entering any kind of "chamber" to deaden sound.
and polished muffler and tips, stainless construction, and about $325 off ebay is hard to beat

Re: Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
The best HP gains come from the catbacks/setups that do not use a muffler (so to speak). So you would gain the most from SLP loudmouth, TSP rumbler, Dynomouth or even just a plain old cutout. Bare in mind though that these setups have a downside to them. They cause more drone and rasp then traditional muffler catbacks and are a lot louder. Now louder is usually better but with LT headers and no cats they can be ear bleeding and cop attacting loud. This can be bad.
If your not going to go with LT headers or you always plan to run cats then I would say the TSP rumbler would be a great choice (bullet muffler sounds better then the resinator IMO). If your going to run LT headers and no cats (a lot of people do) then get something a bit quieter like the hooker catback or magnaflow. Your ears will thank you in the long run.
If money is no object then I highly recommend GMMG. Too pricey for me but it flows great and sounds awesome even with headers.
Good Luck

Re: Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
I have the LoudMouth and it sounds great. It does have the drone only at about 40 mph at 2000 RPM's but I have 3.73's and its always about 2,000 RPM's cruising, so its got drone but its not enough to make you wanna take it off. The dual tips kinda sound like a fart for some reason though. Not sure about the HP but I couldnt feel a difference. If ya want HP get the ARE stage 2 or 3 heads and cam yummm!
Re: Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
Loudmouth puts out some good numbers...your basically gonna get the same from any catback except for flowmaster...Id say either the hooker or slp system

Re: Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
Does anyone have any numbers on the GMMG exhaust. It sounds amazing but it is just so much money.
My friend, Gloveperson, has the Magnaflow on his 98 Z. I am very impressed by the system. Looks great, sounds great and has a great price. It's, well, great!

Re: Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
Bang for the buck for a cat back has to be to get a used low milage SLP dual/dual. I've seen them go for under $100 with very low miles. They're stainles and flow great, but are a bit quiet for most. They do sound nice when you have headers and ORY though.
Re: Best exhaust to install for HP gains?
Hooker. A little quiet without headers, but very mean with them. Loud, but not obnoxious. Less drone than any other header/catback combo I've heard... Great price.
They will all get you around the same power gains...seems like you might want to chose yours on sound alone.
Good luck!
