Another.. "Help me pick a Cam" thread.
YEah.. I really didn't want to do this thread.. But I'm between cams... (I'm just going to do a cam for now until I can save for the heads. and a DD.)
TSP Torquer V.3 -231/234 .643"/.598" 112 LSA -----or----- TSP MS3 -237/242 .603/.609" 112 LSA I want something streetable. I want POWER but not an overall HUGE cam. My buddy has the MS4 cam and it doesn't like to cruise well at low R's (1500-2000). He's also telling me just to get the MS4 and go all out. The high lift seem like they will not be that street friendly, but I'm SURE they will make some mean power!! :devil: I'm really fiending for a cam right now. I need it for the summer. Who makes the Trex anyway? I've heard the MS4 and Trex are about the same w/ the MS4 being a bit calmer. |

yet you're looking at the ms3, ms4 and Trex?? i would suggest the torquer or maybe even a bit smaller. |

If you're going between those two, I'd pick the torquer. The MS3 is going to be aggravating to daily drive with that much duration in a 346. |
I'm going to install a Strange 12bolt rear w/ 3.73's eventually.. But for now, I'm stuck w/ the 3.43 stocker.
I don't think the MS3 or TQ'r is all THAT big.. I also took a look at the F13. That one cought my eye. = 230/232 .595 .585 112 I also forgot to mention... I was thinking today on my way home that I will be getting a turbo in the future... I was going to get a Speed Inc Turbo grind. 225/225 .581 .581 113, but it's a bit small for me. At least it has SOME lope to it... |
THAT big is all relative. A few years ago those would have been considered quite radical. Now people run daily drivers with those big cams, but I wouldn't.
I'd have to agree the FM13 or something in that duration and lift range. |

I couldn't imagine going with a bigger cam than that and enjoying driving it around. You WILL have to spin the motor to make power and leave/downshift at 4000+ rpm to hit it. |
^ I do hear that.. MY buddy's MS4, when it was running (lifters went), wasn't too cruise friendly. You had to bring it up a bit to get it to move from a stop.
I was looking at cams that had 1600-6400 'powerband'. That Speed Inc turbo grind seems nice.. Should have a wide band w/ driveability... I think I'm gonna go w/ that one.. Ad a turbo to it! = WOAH! |
maybe take a look at the traditional split cams..... like a 224/228 on a 112lsa. That way you get the sound your after and have a cam that pulls from 1800 (224) to 6400 (228), especially since you are gonna run the 3.42's for a while.

I got a 233/239 and it would be the biggest I would do. How about the .588 they seem quite good.

224/228's cought my eye, but they seemlike they would be a bit small... But again, add a turbo... . I swear I thought I remember LS1 Speed offering a turbo cam that was 232/234 .562 .566 113 ~ish... Somewhere along those lines. I don't see it there any more. All they have now is the 225/225 .581 .581 113... :shrug: 232/234 .581 .588... 113.... That'd be it..... Dang it I can't make up my mind, but those #'s are about what I want.. |

LS1 speed has their own custom grinds. Give them a call, it just may not be on their website.
If you're going turbo, there are some pretty good numbers being put out with the LS6 and GT2-3 cams. |
I'm getting the torquer V.2. 232/234 .595/.598 113lsa. Too big for a turbo?
Would the 918's be ok for this cam? Or are springs rated @ valve lift? Or would they be best for the Speed inc 225/225 .581 .581 113? I'm gonna give them a call and ask about their previous cams for turbo. |
I wouldn't run 918's at all when you can pick up double gold springs w/Ti retainers and good locks that are good to .650 lift for $250 shipped.
Plus I've seen what happens when the 918's break and a valve meets the piston. that was on a much milder cam too. IMO, if know you're going to go turbo then get a turbo grind. Otherwise you'll be leaving some power on the table. Talk to speedinc or some other place that specializes in forced induction. |
