Z28 or not?

I just test drove a used 1994 Camaro and the guy said it was a Z28, however he didn't have the Z28 logos on the car. He said that when he painted the car he never put them back on.
I thought a Z28 had 150 MPH on the speedometer, but this one says 110 MPH. How fast does it go, and is it a Z28 or not?

Re: Z28 or not?

Did you check under the hood? Was there 8 cylinders or 6? If it had 8 cylinders it is a z, if it has 6 cylinders it is not. Unless he swapped out motors in a v6 camaro then it is a z28. I do not know about the speedometer. Mine was a 150 mph but I am not sure if they were all like that. Also there is a distinct exhaust tone difference between an lt1 and a v6 camaro. I would get the guys vin number and find out all about it. Why did he get it painted? Was it wrecked? These are also some things you need to find out too.

It sounds like a fishy car, I would tread carefully.

Re: Z28 or not?

it shouldnt be that tough to find out if its a v8 or not, either look at the engine, look at the exhaust etc.. is it fast at all?
also some v8's have the 110 speedo, just depends what options the z28 has.. the z28's with the 150 speedo's also came with z rated tires 323 gears etc. i think the ones that have 110 speedo's have 273's and didnt come with z rated tires from the factory, they should also have a speed limiter

if someone wants to correct any of what i posted feel free. its been a while since i last thought about all the 110/150 speedo stuff

Re: Z28 or not?

If it is a true Z28 and never had badges, it might be a B4C "police" camaro, check the RPO codes for that to make sure. Real B4C's had badges on the back filler panel but not the sides.

Also, just look at the engine, you can tell the difference between an LT1 and v6 in a heart beat.

Check the VIN on carfax, they will tell you for free if it has 8 cylinders or not.

Is it manual? Manual v6 had 5 speeds, v8's had 6 speeds.

All Z28's came with 150 MPH speedometer, doesn't matter what options you had. v6's got 120 or 110 or something.

Personally, I would pop the hood, if it is a v8, I would bombard the guy with questions since the speedo is wrong, the carfax might say different, why aren't badges put back on, and so on. If it is a v6, I would walk away. But that's me. No sense in getting a camaro unless you want the real deal.

I've seen a 110mph speedo Z28 at a local car show, i thought it was a V6 with Z badges until he started the car and popped the hood, they are pretty rare but they do exist.

Not true. B4C had no exterior badging at all.

The 8th character in the VIN is a P if it is a natural V8. Also check the console door for the option codes.

Re: Z28 or not?

Correct, not all z28's had a 150 mph speedo, if they came with zrated tires they did, if not, they came with a 110 mph speedo ( car would shut off at 110), nothing to do with the gears. Also, not all z28's came with the badging, again B4c's did not, and lots of people take off thier badging to be more of a sleeper. A true 94 v6 will have a 3.4L motor in it, and I believe it even says 3.4L on the intake. Besides, if you can't tell the difference between the two, maybe you shouldn't have one. Seriously, it is night and day. Check the VIN to be absolutely sure. good luck.
