Wierd issue

I have a strange problem with my camaro. I have taken it to a local mechanic and he cannot fix it and have searched the boards to no avail. Basically if you are idling at a light the rpm's will shoot up to about 3000 and you have to press the break hard or the car wants to take off. I end up throwing it in nuetral when I recongnize it is happening. The car spikes to about 3500 then settles back down to 600. Anyone have any suggestions?

idle control motor?

Might want to add some basic info about the car.... appears from your screen name that its a 94. What engine, what trans, any major mods?

A "signature" saves you the need to type that info with every post.

mine did that before. it was my floormat. it would somehow get pushed up and press down the gas, i had to literally stand on the brake to keep from hitting the car in front of me. did it acouple of times. but thats probably not your problem...

Sounds like a vacuum leak like I had. When the intake manifold leak was fixed,it went away.Hope this helps. The mechanic also replaced those little hoses that run along side the pass. side of the intake manifold.My02.

heard from some others it sounds like a vacuum problem as well. Could it be the throttle body?

Did you check for vacuum leaks? I have heard of people using the soap spray test but sometimes you can hear or feel for leaks.

not familiar with the soap spray test. what is that?

Get a bottle of soapy water and spray it where you think there may be a leak. If air bubbles appear, that's your problem.
