what resistor do i use to bypass the VATS??

hey guys, alot of you have been helping me diagnose my VATS problem and i thank you! I just recently disconnected the VATS under the steering column, temporarily so my car will just start everytime but i want to get rid of the light as well so im going to use the diagram from shoebox's site and put in a resistor.. well i just got a key made the other day ( i thought that would fix the problem) and on the receipt it says #5 VAT key, and when i compared that to shoebox's site this is what it says;
pellet code nominal low high
5 1130 1085 1195
which leaves me with some questions
is it safe to say that the #5 on the receipt is the pellet code (its from the chevy dealer)?? Im asking cuz i dont ahve access to a ohm meter to measure the values, and even if i did i wouldnt know how to use it
also
What resistor do i get for a #5 pellet code?

All the help is appreciated! I am not the best when it comes to electronics .. thanks in advance..

If yours is a #5, it should be a 1.130 ohm resistor.

Take a multimeter and read the resistance of the pellet in your key, then just get the same. Somewhere there is a chare of what it should be and a tollerance range

Radioshack sells resistors.

Correction....1.130 Kohm.

so i went to radio shack and bought two different resistors.. 1.0kohm and 1.5kohm.. i snipped the 2 wires under the dash and just twisted the 1.0kohm resistor on but the security light is still on.. BUT my car starts every time, which tells me that its the corect resistor but the light wont turn off!! hmm so what should i do now?

Assuming it's a number 5, the lowest value you could have is 1085. You bought a 1K and depending on what tolerance you got it could vary by as much as 200 either way. So it's possible it's wrong.

Why don't you take your key to RS and have them measure the pellet?

Then get some resistors with their help and add them in series or parallel until you have a value close to what you measured?

Why did you cut the harness when you could have simply slid the resistor tales in the connector for a nice tight fit and kept the harness intact for future reuse?

You did put the resistor on the side that goes to the PCM and not upto the ignition switch, right?

As you stated in your first post, the range for the pellet is 1085-1195 ohms. So, neither reisitor your bought would be the right one (disregarding tolerance). Use your 1kohm resistor and add a 100 or 150 ohm resistor to the end of it. That should give you ~1100 or 1150 ohms and be within the range you need.

Use a digital multimeter to test the resistance. When I bypassed VATS cars at Best Buy, thats what we did when making the remote start VATS bypass relays.

OHMS?? oh i get it now haha the resistors i have arent even close to what i need!! oh man you guys are very helpful! i did all of the above but i thought i only needed one resistor for 1kohms... anyways ill head to radio shack soon and pick up the other resistors, hopefully the light will go away..

thanks again..

Still not sure you understand. You CAN buy a (one) resistor that is 1kohms. You already did. But that is not the resistance you need. It needs to be in the range already noted. You can chain resistors together (adding the values) to get the resistance you need. From this and the other VATS posts you have had, I don't think I have seen anyone have so much trouble dealing with it.

1. the white wires wrapped in orange are just supposed to be left open?
2. the resistor i just purchased, 1 ohm, looked nothing like the 1kohm resistor i have.. its the only one radio shack had and its rectangular shaped, about 1.5 inches long.. maybe its the wrong one?
uhh, a 1000 ohm resistor and a 1 ohm resister equal 1001 ohm, you need a to get a 100 ohm, and use the 1000 ohm and the 100 ohm, to get 1100 ohm to put you in the center of the range needed
