What is a catback?

 I hear this quite often and still have no clue what it is/does.

In case you actually are serious...

Catback is an aftermarket exhaust system from the catalytic converters to the ehaust tips. Some of them have a muffler, some don't. Usually the catback is also of a larger diameter than the stock exhaust, thus creating better flow and more horsepower.

Hope this helps. :)

The catalytic converter is right after the headers/manifolds right?

Re: What is a catback?

more or less yeah. headers/manifold---some kind of y pipe-- then cat--- then catback. The cat back replaces everything from the cat... back. Hence the name. You really never had it explained before?

How do you have over 1800 posts and still not know what this is? Just curious, cuz it seems like something that should be fairly straightforward.

 :o I guess I'm just ignorant.

I've got to learn somewhere :p

So what if a car has true duals? Does it have two Catalytic Converters, then two catbacks?

Let me see if I understand the Catalytic Converter to. As far as I know, it just helps out with emissions by use of the oxygen sensor (which translates your air/fuel ratio?) correct? If so, what exactly does the Converter do? What does it convert exhaust into?

Re: What is a catback?

The converter acts like a filter, changing harmful gasses into less harmful gasses. The chemicals in the cat actually change the molecular structure of the exhaust gasses. For example, it can add one oxygen atom to CO (carbon monoxide) and change it to CO2 (carbon dioxide). Its actually pretty amazing how that thing works.

Oh, and the oxygen sensor does not aid in how the converter works. The oxygen sensors do fine tune the air fuel mixture (before cat) but the job of the rear oxygen sensor (OBD2) is to make sure that the cat is working correctly. Once the cat is warmed up, it does its own thing without help from anything elese. The only outside help the cat needs is from the AIR system, that helps the cat to reach operating temp quicker.

Re: What is a catback?

If a car has true duals it usually has an x-pipe and some sort of strait pipes or turndowns, so not really two catbacks. It may/may not have convertors. I'd lean towards no as it would still be illegal as you would be relocating the cats.

P.S. To add about catalytic convertors. They are a device that has a direct solid to gasseous transfer as mentioned in the previous posts. Other then industrial scrubbers you would be hard pressed to think of anything else that does that.
