Starter finally crapped

Turn the key and "click' click'click". It has lots of juice. Just wont fire. Is there a way around spending $122 plus a $60 core on a new one? Can it be rebuilt somehow? Any help would be great! Thanks, Gregg

nope, had to replace mine recently too, a lot of play in the shaft and the housing inside where the flywheel is was destroyed into tiny pieces, not hard to change though two bolts and two wires

Does anyone have a pic of what it looks like from underneath? Or better yet perhaps a step by step? Thanks!

Jack the car up or put it up on ramps, disconnect the battery ground, crawl under and look on the passenger side of the engine next to the oil pan cant miss it, take off the wires attached to it or take off the bolts holding the starter up and then take off the wires, the second makes it a little easier to do. take it to a parts store and get them to test it first(you need the core anyways) and if its bad get a new one, if not then search for more problems.

If you hit it with a hammer you can get a few more starts out of it.

Hey, when you say "click click click" is that the rapid fire chattering? I am wondering because that's what I have. Does that mean my starter is going?

Re: Starter finally crapped

I should have specified it is only one "click" per turn of the key. So if I turn it three times it goes "click, click, click". I am going out right now to try and take it off.

Before you replace starter I would have the battery checked ( load test ) your lights and horn may work but car wont start due to defective battery, the battery has enough amps to operate the accessories but not enough amps to turn car over. Just a thought.
