Re: Shifter button sticking

Is it hard to push the button in, or does the button just not "engage"? I had a little problem like this when I put on a new shift ****. Can't really tell you what to do, but take of the shift **** and mess around with the white plastic rod the button pushes on. When I put the new **** on I put it on too far down and too tight and it was hard to push the button/shift. Hope this kinda helps .

Re: Shifter button sticking

I had the same problem with my 95 a few years back. It was very annoying...

I opened the center console and sprayed WD40 pretty much everywhere under there and to the **** etc. and that help at least a little bit.

I asked the same question at that time and didn't get a specific answer, either, so good luck.

Re: Shifter button sticking

I had the same problem in my 96, i went to shift from park and once i got the button free'd up i struggled a little bit to move the shifter. So i pulled the center console (breaking the ashe tray cover btw, so be careful of that) and well much to my suprise it was packed i mean packed with cigarette butts. Dont ask why but the previous owner stuffed their butts where they just dont belong. Im not saying that's gonna be your problem but after i got it all cleaned out I had to clean all the gear mechanisms and pretty much everything that moved in there and since i cleaned it all out I havnt had a problem since, idk i doubt that will help ya out but cleaning it out inside might help ya out.

Re: Shifter button sticking

Do a search on this topic and you will find a cure. I had the same problem. Basically you have two options. 1. disconnect the solenoid mentioned above which is under the console (which is what I did) and no more problem. However, you lose the safety of having to depress the brake to shift out of park. 2. Replace the solenoid. I have no idea of the cost. Wish I could be more help but searching is what I did to find the cure.

Re: Shifter button sticking

I just replaced one for a customer, the solenoid is cheap and is your problem, most likely. Its energized when in park until you depress the brake switch (which could also be the problem, but not likely). To test, remove the shift ****, then the console cover by prying it off the console itself. Disconnnect the solenoid plug and probe for power, one of the wires should have like 12V. Hit the brakes and see if it goes to 0V. If it does, yuor solenoid is bad and sticking, which is the case I had. If you want to, leave it unplugged and it will disable it, but the part is like under $30.

No Need to replace the selenoid.....just remove the bar coming out of it

You can get to it very easily with the shifter plate out of the way. There is about a 4 inch bar with a plastic ball joint connector on the end of it going from the solenoid to the shifter. I used a flat head screw driver to seperate ball joint. Then that bar will slide out of the solenoid. (may need to have foot on the brake pedal with ignition on to get the bar out of the way, or maybe its the other way around. I did it a few years bakc ) The problem is fixed. Only drawback is the car can shift out of park with the ignition off but you still have to press the button down. It took maybe 5 minutes to do and that was because I was cleaning out the trash and change under the shift plate

I would highly suggest replacing the solenoid as opposed to just leaving it disconnected... You can do that so you can drive to the parts desk, but not having that solenoid in is a HUGE safety risk.

The P/N is 012538778, btw.

Its not that bad of a risk. I have had mine off for 3 years now and no problems. Its like the throttle body bypass. It has its advantages and disadvantages.

If its such a HUGE safetly risk why don't all cars/trucks have it so you must be pressing on the brake to shift out of park?

On my 2000 Dakota I don't have to have my foot on the brake to shift out of park.
