Rick Hendrick Special Edition Camaro - Real?

Guy here has a nice 97 Camaro SS, black stripes and say it's this. Says 380hp. Is this real/true?

TIA, Ryan

Thats right. :) They made 61 of the Hendrick SS's, all in 1997. There was one prototype that is a 96' car. Four of the 61 Hendrick SS's were convertibles. Also, there were 9 Hendrick LT4 SS's. These 4 LT4's were included in the total production run of LT4 30th anniversary cars, so they are white with the orange heritage stripes. Lastly, they made 30 Hendrick Motorsport 3800 V6 Camaros. There were 5 or 6 different colors, all with rally stripes. The Hendrick SS's had the 17" chrome Firehawk wheels, while the LT4 Hendrick SS's had the white ZR1's. The 3800 Hendrick Camaro's had a 16" version of the Firehawk wheel, and the 4 Hendrick SS covertibles also had the 16" Firehawks. BTW the Hendrick SS's were all silver with black stripes, and the highest HP for the LT1 SS's was 315. I owned #54 of the 61 Hendrick SS's. See the link in my signature for TONS of pics I took of it over the years, before it was totalled in 03'. :(

Feel free to ask more questions. :D

97HMS,

Thanks very much for the informative reply. Would you mind telling me why some of those 1997 SS's had 10 additional h.p.?

The car in question....the owner never said it had 380 h.p., it's just that a thread the o.p. and I found was concerning an HMS SS, and "that" owner claimed 380, so we were wondering if any had additional power, basically.

His car looks identical to a regular silver SS, except it has two black stripes on the hood. Aside from that...no decals on the side, nothing on the back, no special wheels, etc. Just the standard ZR1's. I think even the "SS" on the fenders is red, instead of black.

I was just wondering if somebody pulled something over on my friend, the owner of this car. That's looking entirely possible, unfortunately. :-/

I'm a huge LT1 SS fan, I think they are some of the coolest cars in automotive history. Thanks for the replies.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the 10 extra ponies came from the optional exhaust.

I don't know if it was just a 'perk' for the Hendrick cars, but the boost from 305 to 315hp was supposedly via the SLP dual/dual exhaust.

He could have purchased the stripes from SLP, they sold them for a few years after the Hendrick cars were produced. There were only 4 cars with the side stripes like on mine (see my Webshots), and they were dealer installed. The Firehawk wheels were on ALL of the Hendrick cars however. The SS badges were all standard black, so it sounds like someone changed those for sure anyways.

It sounds like either a 97' SS with the Hendrick stripes, or it sounds like someone with a Hendrick car liked the ZR1's better. There are some other things to look for for ID purposes: dash plaque, just like all other SS's, above the radio...........the Hendrick SS's had a unique "Hendrick Motorsports" dash plaque. I actually still have mine, its sitting right here on my desk. Also, the Hendrick cars came with 2 sets of floormats, one set being embroidered with "Hendrick Motorsports", and the same for a custom car cover.

Well, his just says Supersport or SS or whatever above the radio on the right side. Silver car though with the hood stripes; I bet that the scenario you proposed is the case. Shame. :(

Thanks very much everyone!

The Hendrick package is just an appearance package, nothing more. Each car is individually numbered. Firehawk wheels, the black stripes, and a slew of Hendrick Motorsports badged items set it apart from your average SS. That covers the LT1 SS's and the 3800 V6's. The LT4 cars on the other hand are your 'regular' LT4 cars, with the badging. All 9 of the LT4 Hendrick cars were delivered at the Hendrick compound in Charlotte, NC. All of the cars were signed by Rick Hendrick himself, and some of the NASCAR drivers.
