Rear gear ratios, Question

How can you tell what gear ratio, a car has for the auto tranny, is there a tag on the rear end? do they have codes on the glove box door or on the car doors? If so what would the codes be for the different gears?I've been looking at 00-02 Z-28's or SS and, I don't want to end up with 2.73, I would like 3.23 or what ever the lower gear is, but I don't know how to tell what it is before I buy . Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rear gear ratios, Question

theres an official way to tell but im not sure of the codes off hand that are located in the glove box. If the shifter selector allows you to seletc 1st you have 3.23's if not 2.73s it is.

Thank you, Bud M, I've heard people on this sight talk about one gear set not letting you put it into 1st gear, Why? I don't under stand that. But then I'm just learning about the f-body.

Re: Rear gear ratios, Question

Maybe it is just lt1's but when you have 3.23's you have a selectable 1st gear on the column but when you have 2.73's you don't the lowest you have is 2nd. That help at all?

Re: Rear gear ratios, Question

on lt1 cars, 2.73 equipped models would only have p r n (d) 2
the 3.23 cars would be able to select 1

on ls1 cars, both 2.73 and 3.23 can select 1

Re: Rear gear ratios, Question

You can also jack the rear up, turn the tire one revolution and count how many time the D/S turns.

Is it LT1 or LS1? Didn't all LS1's come with an Aluminum D/S. While I believe, unless it's 1LE or SS/Trans-am, it has a steel D/S.

Not true, no rudeness expressed in this statement but when you begin a statement with "maybe",,,

maybe you shouldn't offer advice that is not true.

I have a 93 LT1,, RPO code GU2 (2.73) and the gear indicator (on the council sp? not column) does have D, D, 2, 1. My car is all original parts with exception of exhaust, 97 Z28 rims, and the chip.

yours might also have been messed with
all you have to do is cutout that little black piece covering the "1" and then you can shift into 1
never heard of somebody with 2.73s lt1 having 1 available from the factory
course, 93s are weird so...

Re: Rear gear ratios, Question

Not all LS1's came with aluminum driveshafts. Just 6-speeds and 3.23 geared autos. ALL V8 powered F-bodies got a posi though (or some form of "limited slip differential").

A '97 LT1 Formula, Auto. I call it my allmost 1LE, the only things it has are A/C, and power windows/locks. No Leather, t-tops, power seats.....

Havent had the chance to get under it yet, will post back when I do later today

Good resource.

The board search feature should also be a newbie's first place to go.
