Overheating problem
 

my z28 has been overheating recently. I haven't noticed any leaks. But when it gets hot it throws out the water through the coolant tank.

Its weird because temp gauge goes all the way up to the red real quick and just as fast it comes down on its own to 180.

Seems to me maybe the thermostat gets stuck or something?

Any one have any suggestions?

Have you checked the cap to make sure it is holding the recommended 18psi pressure?

No I haven't. I don't have a pressure tester. Where can i purchase a cheap one? I see one at autozone for 75dlls is that how much they go for?

They go for that much or more. A new cap is cheaper. BTW, Autozone will loan you a pressure tester, after you put down a deposit that you get back when you bring the tester back.

If you are just checking the cap, and not the radiator, take the cap to an auto parts store and ask them to check it. Or buy a new cap.

I just bought the cap and it didn't over heat today. I did get a smell of hot water. Forgot to check under the hood, when i got home today. But I will check tomorrow.

Car over heated again yesterday this time it didn't cool it self off.. I was close to home so i drove it and it was super hot gauge was way passed red.. I was pissed so i didn't care what happened to it.

As i was getting home i started hearing weird noises... The ones you don't want to hear when the car is overheating. Just barely though they weren't that loud. So i thought i might need to do some engine repair. But i turned it on today and it sounds normal, responds normal and drives normal.

My question is how can i know if the water pump went bad? Now that i remember i kept on hearing some weird noise before all this. It sounded like a bearing going bad. i took it to the mechanic and he couldn't pin point where the sound was coming from. This went on for months. Could the water pump been it?

Raise the front of the car and look at the bottom of the water pump. There's a small hole in the bottom of the pump. If it is discolored or wet, that means the pump is bad. Be sure to do it safely.
