'95 LT1 power steering pump noise at start up
Sounds like a belt squealing for just a second, is real bad when cold, and turning the wheel at idle right after start up makes all kinds of racket, so I'm fairly certain its coming from the power steering. I recently replaced the belt with a Gatorback and since the issue continues to get worse. Sometimes it's quite embarrassing how loud it is.
Fluid is full and clean, no leaks...
Is this typical of the power steering starting to go bad? I haven't had to replace a power steering pump since back in the '80s on my old MCSS.

Re: '95 LT1 power steering pump noise at start up
Kind of sounds like some solid plastic ***** being banged around in a solid container at idle also. Makes the same sound when turning the wheel ever so slowly so I'm fairly certain it's the pump. Have read several other posts on other sites that complain of a squealing belt sound. I have noticed that the steering feels a little more tight than it used to. This may be the same squeal I would hear when down shifting on the highway and the rpms would fly up to 4000+ it would have a sharp split second squeal just before it would shift to the next higher gear...always thought it was the belt which is why I switched to the Gatorback.

Re: '95 LT1 power steering pump noise at start up
Update: Turns out it was not the pump after all. The problem continued to get worse, and began doing it constantly when the AC compressor was on.
Now that it was making the noise constantly I was able to get a stethoscope and listen around and determined it was coming from the harmonic balancer area.
Replaced the balancer and problem seems to be solved now!
