O2 sensors

I'm removing my stock Y-pipe for my header/y-pipe install. How do you remove the O2 sensors from the exhaust pipe and/or manifolds? I wrenched on the nut that seems to hold it in, but no dice! I just stripped the hex shape right off. Is it supposed to just unscrew, or is there some trick? So now I just unplugged it to get the pipe it's in out, but I still need to get it out eventually. HELP!

Re: O2 sensors

If you stripped the hex, then there is little you can do but to grip it with anything you can. They make a special socket to remove them.

sockets are great the have a slit down the side for the wiring so it isnt in your way.

Re: O2 sensors

vice grips and some leverage , also heat up the pipe to expand it

Re: O2 sensors

The sensors can be a real pain to get out, it might be easier just to buy a new set of 02 sensors...I paid less then a 100.00 for my two front 02 sensors.
Also, what kind of headers are you running? If you are going to use long tubes, then you are probably not going to have the post-cat (rear 02) sensors anyhow so there is no sense in struggling to fight them out of the y-pipe.

Re: O2 sensors

Heat the pipe/manifolds. It will be 10x easier to remove them.

I am running LTs, but I'm retrofitting some pypes cats, and rear O2 sensors in the 3'' y-pipe. I need to pass the sniff test, and I also cant have the trouble codes from missing 02 sensors. (emissions)
but yeah i'll prolly buy some new 02s from somewhere

Sounds like you are doing what I did. I didn't run rear 02 sensors though...I wonder if I would still get a check engine light anyhow considering how small the converters are that I am running. The only reason they are there is to pass the visual inspection if one was ever to be done.

Re: O2 sensors

doesn't getting rid of the rear 02s make the check engine light come on?

Thats exactly what I'm doing, running 02 simulators. It is frankly alot easier then having to drill holes in the y-pipe, weld in 02 bungs, and run 02 harness extensions to mount post-cat 02 sensors. Plus, as I mentioned above, I don't feel the cats. I am running may be "efficient" enough so I might get a check engine light anyhow.

Re: O2 sensors

makes sense. Where did you get your simulators? Which ones are the best for the best price?

The simulators are made by Caspers Electronics and I purchased the pair from www.thunderracing.com for 88.00
