Noise and vibration 96 z28
So I just recently got my camaro back on the road. It has been down for a few years. I had no time or money to fix it.
Anyway I changed the u joint in the rear and also replaced the pinion seal cause it was leaking. I’m having and loud wha wha wha coming from the car at high speeds (60+) it gets worse the faster I go. I thought wheel bearing definitely. I check all four wheels and their is no play. When I spin the tires also feels smooth. I’m thinking I did not put the u joint in the right way. Does this sound like what may have happened? Any help or places to look next would be greatly appreciated.

When you changed the pinion seal, was there any play in the pinion shaft? Sounds like possible worn pinion bearing, which in turn can damage the ring and pinion gears.

Did you have the “wha wha wha” noise before and after you replaced the pinion seal, or only after replacement? When you took the pinion nut off, did you mark it’s position relative to the pinion shaft and flange, before you loosened it, then return it to the same position (plus a tiny 1/16” incremental turn) when you reinstalled it? That is the factory service manual method of trying to maintain pinion preload.
Recently helped someone with a seal replacement, and they realized the pinion was so loose that they could move it up and down, indication a bad bearing.

It was before and after. I assumed wheel bearing and replaced the seal without checking. This actually makes the most sense as to what the problem is.
Ill check tonight if the pinion bearing has any play in it.
