for the lt1 fbody owners

maybe one of the dumber questions but i have the cold air intake kit where the cone filter sits inside of the little "air box" which is made up of plastic which i think is one piece, now if i remove this the filtre will be exposed right in the air but still about a foot or so above the ground. question is will i get more power as it is exposed directly in the air or should i leave it be and just let the filter hang right there in that box area which is below where the stock air filter housing was located. thanks for any input and sorry again if it is a dumb question
edit: let me know if pictures are needed and i will get some

the plastic that is being cut in these pictures is what i am talking about

I have the K & N cold air kit-on that plastic area where those air slots are,( bottom of car) i cut them wider, thinking i will really increase the air flow to filter. If i understand you right i wouldnt leave it wide open, cuz if you hit a bump, there goes a high dollar filter. You really wont notice anything no matter what you do, just stay out of deep water in the road. Dwayne:D

alright thanks, im actually thinking about doing that mod that is in the link above.

I left mine wide open without a problem. But that is just basicly because I am lazy and didnt feel like putting the deal back on and never got around to it.

how long have you had it like that for? ive had mine like this for a month or two and the filter is already visibly dirty

96ZCamaro 08-09-2007 01:02 PM

I already had dirty filters on ther,e i need to get new ones

oneclean97z 08-09-2007 01:05 PM

well i still have my plastic box piece thing with those "air slots" so i am planning on doing that scoop mod exactly as he has it done

I truthfully do not think that opening up that air box would help much. The engine can get as much air as it needs with the box how it is. It isnt like it will run out of air.

Beautiful. I've had that happen. I took mine off and left it off for a long time (still off in fact) and I've lost a filter just like he mentioned. As for performance, it's not really worth it to risk losing the filter, cuz you probably won't notice it until you've sucked something into the engine.

On your other point, I actually gained about a tenth or so back when I did that little scoop mod. It helps force-feed the air instead of just passively sucking it in. It won't net you any dyno numbers, but could give you a mph or so in the quarter.

I actually bought a bigger, longer K&N filter with a threaded stud on the end which fits perfectly in a hole in the bottom of the fender which was left available from not putting the plastic panel back on...It is very much exposed to lots of air and will not fall off...

i feel like to much water etc... is being exposed to the filter though with it just hanging there in open air, in a little while i suppose i will run up to home depot and get some of that aluminum stuff and get to it. thanks for the input
