Unhappy Lost Ignition Key

I lost my ignition key and don't have a spare. Does anyone know if a dealer order a new key with the VIN? Thanks.

Re: Lost Ignition Key

If you can prove ownership, they should be able to make you one.

Re: Lost Ignition Key

I only got one set when I bought car used. I got another set from the dealer, no problem, when I had them do a little work. I think it was twenty-five or thirty bucks.

Re: Lost Ignition Key

Lost mine yesterday...posted it in the lounge. I flew home over the weekend and took my car keys off my key ring so my roommate could hold onto them incase it needed to be moved. Went fishing yesterday with my keys in my pocket and lost my ignition key. Found it today in the spot I was sitting. I think with proof of ownership and your I.D. its like $25. All depends on where you go. Its time for me to go get a spare now. Good luck. Nathan

Re: Lost Ignition Key

the key blank is 30 bones at the dealer. if they have to code cut though, the price for that varies from dealer to dealer

Re: Lost Ignition Key

So just to confirm, all you need is proof of ownership and the VIN, and the dealer can sell you a new key with VATS chip (assuming nothing has been changed). Even if the car didn't come from the dealer where you're trying to get a key?

I'm looking at buying a 96 with no keys. Don't want to get screwed later.

If I do get screwed and can't get a new key that works, can I just have a locksmith make a key and get a VATS bypass chip? What's the easiest/cheapest way to bypass VATS? The car is a 96 3.8 5-speed.

thanks!
kevin

Re: Lost Ignition Key

Couldnt you just turn off the VATS with LT1 Edit and have a reguler key made?

Re: Lost Ignition Key

I don't know anything, but it'd be way cool if I can. Does LT1 edit work to eliminate VATS on V6s? I reckon it won't do anything else on a V6.... Do I have to buy LT1 edit, or can I borrow it from someone?

I think I'm gonna buy this car....

Re: Lost Ignition Key

holy ****...thats expensive for the spare keys u guys are lookin at...i have the resistor pellet a.k.a. "chip" in mine as well and have a local locksmith that made me a copy for $8...he just took my key...hooked a volt-meter up to it to test the resistance of the pellet in it..got a blank with a pellet of the same resistance since there are only 15 different resistance levels, and cut the key to match mine..works perfect with VATS and everything..

I only had one set of keys and lost them before, came here and because its old GM doesnt have the info for my keys anymore, cost me 314 bucks for a full set of keys, VATS ignition, doors/trunk, and t tops. If you know the resistor number of the chip it makes it cheaper, the guy used some thign that finds what chip is used, but theres like 14 of them and u have to wait like 5 mins between trying them, and of course your paying for the guys time.

Re: Lost Ignition Key

I bought it. I'll let y'all know how the key thing goes.

But check the 2 links below on how to bypass VATS with resistors. You may have to try 15 different ones, but they're cheap and it's easy.
