Gears - $200
Install Kit - $80-125
Labor - $250-350

Yes, the PCM needs to be reprogrammed to correct the speedometer/odometer, and any part of the PCM program that depends on the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) input.

Does your car currently have a limited slip differential (RPO code "G80" on the build parts tag)?

Stop.

Y81 is the code for a base Firebird merchandising package. Has nothing to do with a limited slip diff.

If you do not have a limited slip ("posi") differential, you will probably experience 1-wheel burnouts as soon as the extra torque from the higher numerical gears causes one wheel to break loose. The car will sit there smoking one tire, and going nowhere. Liited slip locks those wheels together to limit 1-wheel burnouts.

The best thing you can do is buy a used rear axle assembly from a 98-02 V8 model, which came standard with a limited slip carrier. Then swap the gears.

stop, stop what i dont know what those codes mean... i think im just gonna get a tuner and be done with it. it'll be cheaper than getting new rear end and then doing gear work. its a 6cly thats why im looking for the best performance alteration for my money less than 500 total...this is my wifes car i just traded another vehicle for. she just wants to feel like she can keep up with me for a little while. i running a 93 lt1
