Exhaust Question

Has anyone ran Pypes Violater mufflers on Fbody Camaro? I have a 96 Camaro, I would like to know if there are any clearance issues before I purchase.

Re: Exhaust Question

You're in the LS1 forum, which covers 98-02 models w/ V8 engine. I'm going to move this to “General 67-02 F-Body Tech" because there’s more traffic. Is your 1996 Camaro a V6 or V8? Are you planning on a stock-style single cross-flow muffler mounted behind the rear axle, or do you have a custom single or dual exhaust the relocates the muffler(s)?

Re: Exhaust Question

Thanks yea it will be dual exhaust I will relocate mufflers I just like the exhaust sound of Pypes Violater need to know if the muffler will be scraping or hitting ground. I saw on YouTube there were a few guys with a Fbody trans am that had exhaust but no camaro.

Re: Exhaust Question

The underside of a Camaro is exactly the same as an underside of a Firebird. If it works on a Firebird, it works on a Camaro.

Again.... V6 or V8? Since you indicate you are converting to a dual exhaust, what headers are you planning to run? Do you intend to run cats? Do you intend to run an X-pipe? How do you plan to run the dual pipes over the axle? Do you want to locate the mufflers in front of the axle or behind? Do you have the dimensions of the specific Violator mufflers you plan to use?

There is a “sticky” in the Exhaust forum showing dual systems. But a lot of the photo links are no longer valid:

Re: Exhaust Question

It's a v8 going with long tubes, probably over the axle I'm new to the whole performance modding thing so I'm up for any suggestions. The mufflers wherever they fit the Dims are 14x9x4 going with full 3inch and no cats.

Re: Exhaust Question

Here's my setup with 3” Borla XR-1 Race mufflers bolted directly to header collectors. The Borla dimensions are 16” x 7.875” x 4.5” thick:

Going over the axle with duals on these cars is difficult. You either have to take both pipes over in the same location on the passenger side where the stock single intermediate pipe is routed, limited to two 2-1/2” pipes. Or you take the passenger side of the duals over in the stock routing, and relocate the panhard bar to get the driver side dual over the axle toward the driver side.

Re: Exhaust Question

I have 2 1/2" duals over the axel, and he is right, it is really tight. You can do the BMR or UMI pan hard relocation kit to give you enough space to take 3" over the axel though.

Re: Exhaust Question

So I'm probably going to go with the kit so I can go over the axle but is over the over preferred. And I did take a look at the xr1 there is for sure no problem with clearance with those I was looking for a throaty deep sound yet still pretty loud that's why I liked the Pypes I even liked the borla pro xs but I think they may be too quiet for me at idle

Re: Exhaust Question

I wasn’t suggesting you switch to Borla. I just thought that with the picture and the dimensions, you could judge whether your Violater might fit. Is that basically a muffler used on Mustangs? They might not sound the same on an LT1, due to the different firing order.

Re: Exhaust Question

Yea I got you. That's exactly what I did tho it's the same dims as the pro xs so it will work. And I never thought about that but mainly they are on older model cars like the Chevelle, Monte Carlo...

Re: Exhaust Question

It is hard to predict what a muffler will sound like when you are comparing it to another car. I ended up running Magnaflow round style mufflers (similar to this), and the sound comparison with an LS Camaro with the same setup was totally different.

Re: Exhaust Question

Thanks guys I really do appreciate your help, I knew absolutely nothing about the relocation kit and helping me figure out what exhausts would work for me

Good luck with the build and post some pictures when it's done!
