cutouts

I am thinking of getting a cutout before I get a catback just to have the sound and power increase. I hear that leaks are a problem with cutouts and was wondering if this is true. I plan on doing headers and catback in the next year or two. Any input is appreciated.

Re: cutouts

The electric ones leak sometimes when they're supposed to be closed - mine did after a few months. If you don't mind reaching under the car just get one installed under the rear seat and cap it manually - cheaper too.

Re: cutouts

electric are good for closing it before a cop gives you a hard time, but yes they do sometimes leak. reopen it, reclose and your good to go usually. i had a qtp and liked it.

Re: cutouts

Go for it! They're cheap enough to justify- especially if it's 2 years before you get a catback/headers. I'm happy with my non-electric cutout. I can uncork it in literally 30 seconds and seal it back up in about the same time, BUT I let the car cool for about 5 minutes and also have to get out of it to open/close it. With an electric one you wouldn't have to.

I can assure you that you'll be pleased with the extra sound and additional torque.

Re: cutouts

There is a good chance that once you install the cutout, you may not even want to have the catback anymore.

Re: cutouts

i had the QTEC cutout (electric) and it did leak a little but all it took was opening and closing it again and it'd be fine. But a regular cutout is cheap and easy and any competant welder will seal it good so it will not leak.

Re: cutouts

Cool, hope Im a competent welder then! Is the stock pipe 2.5in? Im going to look for install guides just to look at how to do it and guesstimate how long it would take me but if yall have any input or know of a guide with more info I'd appreciate it. Thanks for the input so far.

Jared

Oh, and Im looking at the QTP site and there is an option for stainless or "miled" steel cutout, which should I get? Thanks.

Re: cutouts

The stock piping is 2.75in., you may have to build up your welds to accomodate a 3" cutout. The stainless steel cutout is nice if you have a stainless catback, therefore you wont have a rusty old cutout right in the middle of your nice polished catback.

Re: cutouts

you'll probably just end up keeping your cutout open all the time, when i first got a cutout i was thinking about getting an electric, but once i got it installed, i never closed it(only on long trips would i close it), you'll probably end up keeping it open all the time anyways, manual is all you need IMO

I used my ecutout for EXACTLY that reason because all summer I was coming home around 1:00am since I usually closed when I worked at sonic. I typically run it open all the time now, but it's still a neat gadget to have, and if you want to surprise a ricer, it's really entertaining to give them a rev, then open it, then repeat and see the on their face

I have a manual and keep it closed except at the track because I leave for work very early in the morning every morning and the Flowmaster (w/MACs and !cat) rattles the neighbors windows. For the occaisional ricer that hasn't learned their lesson yet, I want an electric.
