cutout?

I don't understand the idea behind having a cutout. could someone please enlighten me.

david97gsxr 04-14-2004 01:49 AM

"when i start my car i want my neighbors to think the world is coming to an end"...

that's the idea. plus it's the least restrictive exhaust you can have....sanely anyway

teke184 04-14-2004 07:14 AM

look at this illistration

it allows you to totally bypass your exhaust. some people put them before the cats even so they basically run open manifolds/headers for racing but can have a quiet and emissions legal exhaust for daily driving.

cause we all know we only use our cutouts on the track ;)

I have a 1991 camaro, how easy is it to insatll one? Is it easier to do before or after the cat.

teke184 04-14-2004 12:16 PM

it really depends on 2 things..

where your cat(s) are and how loud you want it.

if you have dual cats, and they are in the middle of the ypipe, it shouldn't be too bad to install them in the beginning of the Ypipe, right after the manifolds
if you only have one cat, it is probably right at the end of the ypipe. this may not give sufficient room for a cutout.

warning:
putting the cutout up in the front of the exhaust will cause it to be very loud since all the sound will reverberate off the ground and the car. the farther back you put it the less interior noise you will have.

most guys put the cutout right before the exhaust curves up over the axle, there is a pocket in the floorpan that fits perfect and isn't to hard to get to for uncapping. and being farther back the noise is tolerable.

as for the install, cutting a section of pipe out and weldiing the cutout in it's place is all there is too it.

Like someone already mentioned, all it does is bypass your muffler and/or your cats.

I've got mine right before the I-pipe goes up and over the axle. It's still quiet enough for me to keep it uncapped all the time. Now, I still have stock exhaust manifolds and my cats, so it's muffled a little bit, but not much.

I say just do it, it's a $30 cutout and $40 to weld it. Not a bad deal for what you get.

Well I can do the welding, but $30 for the cut out?? Is that for the non-electric?? I want electric.

teke184 04-14-2004 01:40 PM

the cutout itself is only about $30, then you buy and electric plate that bolts to it for about $150-200 depending

another type is DMH but i don't know the website

Okay I get what you're saying. Because I have been looking and everything was about $180 for the entire set up.

does anyone know how a cut-out would sound on a V6? I just want to get the exhaust a little louder right now without spending all the money to get a cat-back system.

I have no muffler on my V6 chevy truck. And it sounds like a V8.
