Car not giving key back

It will move forward but I cant remove the key, wont turn to unlock. I used Shoeboxs guide of adjusting the park shift cable and it gets the key out but its doing it more and more often. Could the problem be else where?

My wife's Grand AM had what sounds like the same problem. Her shifter had a neutral position safety sensor built in that would allow the key to be removed when the car was in park or neutral. When the sensor died the car decided to keep the key. The car also would not start anymore until we replaced the entire shift assembly. If you're car won't start either this may be it.

Re: Car not giving key back

it sound like it is related to the shift interlock cable

drop the column down and disconnmect the cable from the ignition switch, see if it still does it

turn the wheel all the way to the left as far as you can to where there is no slack at all and try it.

Sounds like the rod from the key to the ignition switch is binding... I had mine do this once when I replaced my ignition switch... I had to drop the column and loosen the two screws that hold the switch to it and move the switch a little.
