A/C Clunks

When I turn on my A/C when my car is warmed up I get warmish air, then there's a clunk from the passenger side of the car and blazing heat starts coming out. What's the problem here?

It sounds a little like the temperature control flapper valve is broken or loose. That's the valve connected to the panel control by a cable.
