420hp 84 TA

my friend has an 84 tran am that used to be a 305 but he put in a 350 with heads a big carb, cam and headers what kind of horespower could he expect if he but a 400 crank in it? he had this computer dino and you put in all of the specs of the engine and it gives you the Hp. It will spin the tires in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and yes 4th.

Re: 420hp 84 TA

You gonna need a lot more information that just putting a 400 crank in it. You need specs for cam, intake manifold, compression ratio, head flow numbers, carb size and jetting, exhaust, etc. Plus, if you want accurate numbers for where you live you also need to know your altitude, barometric pressure, and average temperature. Also, bigger carbs aren't always better.

Re: 420hp 84 TA

Re: 420hp 84 TA

I know a rough estimate. His car will make somewhere between 7 and 500 h/p depending on heads, cam, intake, tranny setup and about 100 other things.

so to recap a minumum of 7 horsepower
and a maximum of 500

Re: 420hp 84 TA

i'd say your low end estimate is off...probably more like 9hp

just putting a 400 crank in the car will only increase displacement a small amount. i think that works out to 377ci?

so its not a huge jump. torque would probably be better.

honestly i say with a 350, with "big" head/cam you are probably sitting at 350hp

Is that at the crank or the wheels?

Wow, that's a 22% driveline loss. Maybe he should consider a lighter flywheel and driveshaft. Could be worth like 0.75 hp.

Re: 420hp 84 TA

The ZZ383 crate engine has 425hp/460lb with the following cam specs .509/.528 and 222/230 @ .050 and uses the same heads as the FastBurn 385

The FastBurn 385 has 385hp/385lb with the following cam specs .474/.510 and 208/221 @ .050

The HT383 has 325hp/415lb with the following cam specs .431/.451 and 196/207 @ .050 and uses Vortec heads

The 330HP/350 has 330hp/380lb with the following cam specs .435/.460 and 212/222 @ .050 and uses Vortec heads

It's important to note, though, that not all of these engines were tested with the cam intake, carb, exhaust setup.

All specs are from www.sdpc2000.com

Re: 420hp 84 TA

Spinning tires through all the gears means he has bad tires and/or bad suspension

Re: 420hp 84 TA

I gotta add this: putting a 400 crank in the engine with no other modifications will make ZERO horsepower. New pistons are needed to make a stroker. Also, the rods/rod bolts will need to be ground for clearance. However, I would love to see and hear the engine that gets a 400 crank with standard 350 pistons and no clearancing.
