turbo spool quicker unhooked?

on a local board, a question has arisen regarding turbo spoolup time.
one of the members has installed a t3/t4 turbo on a 3.8 v6 camaro. before finishing the piping to the throttlebody, they cranked it up and gave it a few rev's. they say the turbo is "spooling" up around 1500rpms, whereas most similar combo's dont spool until 2500rpms. they attest the quicker spoolup to the custom headers plumbed into the turbo.
i say that since the turbo isnt hooked up to the throttlebody (making boost) its allowing the quicker spoolup time.
another member said the fact that its unhooked from the throttlebody means it should actually spool up at a HIGHER rpm??
can anybody clarify this? im pretty curius!!

im guessing spool characteristics are going to be different when connected to the TB.

Why don't you tell him to hook it up to the throttlebody, and then tell us how it spools up. It sounds like he's talking alot of crap.

yea thats what i was thinking, but i just wanted to make sure...
so basically its harder for the turbo to spool up when its connected to the motor, right?

Definitely hook it up and see what happens. Who cares how fast it spools up when it's not finished.

I have a Question also.?

Wouldnt you have to take in affect for the air that the motor is taking in? I mean wouldnt it be harder for the turbo to make pressure if something is pumping the air you just pressureized?

thanks

Yes and no. With the turbo compressor feeding to the atmosphere, it doesnt have to further compress the air in the manifold to get even more in. However, if you feed a motor 10psi that 10psi worth of air is going to come back out the other end and spin the turbine a lot faster.
