STS Question?
 
For those of you that own/use/seen one of these installed on a car. I have a full custom exhaust on my car, *Headers, Custom Y-pipe, Cutout, Muffler* By buying using an STS kit, would I have to get rid of all of that?

yes it replaces your I-pipe and everything. you could still have headers and the y-pipe, just have to get rid of the i-pipe, muffler, cutout

You could keep everything up to the muffler and just swap that portion - slight modifications may be required.

Most people claim they perform better on stock manifolds than with full headers though.

I know some on tech said they couldn't get more than 8 psi or something like that with headers and switched back to the stockers and got like 14 psi. I don't remeber the exact numbers but it was a significant gain.

reason behind that is the cast iron manifolds hold heat in better, thus having more energy behind it.

Theoretically though, if you have headers and have that issue, swap to a smaller turbo since you have less energy spooling the turbo. However you will have less potential as well.

Hmm, so it's from the Y pipe back. I've got one of the Mufflex 3in to 4in collector style Y pipes, I wonder if that would make much of a diff, or screw up boost? How big is the exhaust into the STS i wonder?

Thats byfar THE dumbest thing I've read all day. :no: The wastegate regulates boost level, so unless his turbo is too small, his turbine housing A/R is too large, or some other strange incident, he probably just doesn't know what hes talking about.

My STS kit boosts the exact same if I cold start it and floor it down my street as when it's at operating temp. The heat loss of headers vs. stock manifolds under relatively short WOT pulls would be completely negligible anyway.

You can do whatver you want for the exhaust as long as it goes into the turbo through the provided pipe; meaing the turbo needs to remain located in the same spot. Also an exhaust cutout before or after the turbo would be useless lol. I believe the provided exhaust pipe is just expanded to slip over the stock sized exhaust (2 3/4"?, 3"?).

I know on my car until the exhaust gets hot I do not get full boost in 2nd gear. The wastegate still controls max boost but It just wont get there in 2nd gear until the car has been ran a while. Once hot the thing spools great and is much more responsive. I think heat plays a large role in my case.

Sorry, I don't know how to post them on here....It's a rear mount that is mounted in the trunk well area. Stock manifolds and engine (never had the valve covers off the engine) and wrapped from the cat's back. On my car I think it will boost twice as fast once the exhaust get's hot and it feels much stronger from the seat of the pants.

What turbo are you using? What is the A/R of the turbine housing?

Holset HT3B with 32cm housing but I ported the housing to have one side of the scroll match my exhaust size and blocked the other half off. Spools pretty well for a 74mm turbo mounted in the rear. I have a port to measure back pressure but have not been succesfull getting a reading from it.....I tried a compression tester hooked to the port hopeing it would keep the poundage like it would on an engine. Either there was not enough to register or the 1/8 line I ran to the gage did not flow enough to get a good reading. I'm looking for less than 2 to 1
