Stock MAF sh*ts the bed after procharger install

I just recently installed an ATI procharger kit onto my 1996 Z28 and it was running good for about 450 miles then one day the exhaust tone sounded different and the car seemed to vibrate more than normal at all speeds and at idle. Scanned it and it gave me a code 48 (Had OBD1 conversion done to car) which is a MAF failure code. Do you think it was probably just time for the MAF to go (as far as I know factory MAF, 10 years old) and the extra boost finally killed it or is something else up maybe? Does what I'm describing sound like a bad MAF? Just curious on other peoples experiences, don't want to buy a $125 MAF for nothing (unless someone knows where I can get just the guts, don't need the aluminum housing). Thanks

Have you removed it and inspected it yet? I would check that nothing got sucked up and hit it (dirt, bugs, etc.) and then also make sure it's clean.

I sprayed it with some carb cleaner but it didn't seem to do anything. I'm going to try again with maybe a toothbrush and some carb cleaner but I heard these things are kinda delicate so it might get f*cked up anyways.

Be careful, I'm not sure because I've never tried to clean it with carb cleaner. I always use a electric cleaner. Make sure you don't damage the wires inside. Also check the wiring and plug going to the MAF maybe one of the wires got nicked or something.

You had to relocate the MAF, right? I would definetly check your connections you made to lengthen the wires.

I had to tune out the MAF high frequency code on my OBD2 car because whenever the MAF maxed out it would set the code. Qtips and electrical cleaner work good to clean the element. Also you can shake the MAF to see if you hear loose connections.

The MAF sits in the stock location so I didn't have to modify any part of it or lengthen any wires. The wires seem to be fine and no nicks or cuts that I can see, and my car was converted to OBD 1 and this is the 1st time it's thrown this code and I've had the super on for 450 miles so far. I think, with my luck, it finally just died. Can't really complain though, it's lasted 10 years.

I wouldnt use a tooth brush..Use swabs those little wires are sensitive.

I installed an ATI Procharger (P1SC) back when the MAF was to be relocated to the air filter (lower front). Nowadays, ATI says to keep it in the blow-thru mode up near the throttle-body.

My local shop has said that they have found numberous problems with that layout and suggested that it say as a suck-thru version.

Might be your problem....

I have had this problem also, but my ATI kit relocates the maf as you have suggested. I may try to move it back to orig location and see what happens.

Mine threw that code after leaving the dyno last night. I found that I actually had an intake leak, because I had a hose that came off the air inlet tube, and my car wouldn't ilde worth s**t! After connecting the hose, it idled better and no more codes were found. If you do find that your MAF has gone bad, I have one that has 50k on it descreened I'll sell you for $65.
