S/C Compatibility with SS Hood?
Hi Guys,
I purchased a 96' SS last spring and plan on eventually building a 383 with a supercharger. I want to keep my original SS hood on the car, and thought at one time I had read that their were only a couple types of S/C's that would work with the hood, just because of clearance reasons.
I don't plan on using the intake from the hood, just want to make sure everything will fit underneath.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Unless you are planning on going with a Roots (I think its Roots) style blower, most superchargers for the 4th Gens are up front and low to the ground in relation to the motor, not on top of the motor, meaning you can still have your SS hood and be supercharged.
Here's a video of my Supercharged Z on the dyno with my SS hood;

I have a procharger, but others that are most popular with our cars that are mounted in a similar manner are ; Vortec, and Powerdyne.

Before you buy one you think you want check back here with the type. I have never heard of a problem with clearance on the standard superchargers. I did have to go back to the stock sway bar over the 1le type with mine. They could not have made the dam thing any tighter in several areas. I had to add washers to it to even fit it in. Now i think the pulleys are off slightly. Oh well.
I don't think the Vortech Aftercooler works with the SS hood... You'll probably want to stick with Procharger if you want intercooled boost as a kit. You can always fab up your own intercooler setup otherwise.
Those are some good points. I have the 1LE sway bar in mine, but I also have a D1SC by ATI. Sounds like the Powerdyne unit may be located a little further down than mine.
One thing I did notice when I swapped to the SS style hood was my BMR strut tower brace would no longer fit. The SS hood would lie on top of it leaving it about 2 inches away from being able to close it. I ended up selling it and buying a Hotchkiss strut tower which now fits fine.

I am running an ATI D1 wiith the 97 SS hood. The intercooler mounted below. No clearance problems. I think the hood helps to cool the engine bay while moving, but, there sure are alot of baffels in the SS hood. (Probably for water drain).
