I posted this in the FI section because i think the #5 bearing problem is specific to blower cars mostly
I have approx 1300 miles on my new 355
eagle 4340 crank, 4340 h-beam rods, billet 4 bolt mains, SRP dished pistons, heads and a billet custom cam.
I put the blower on at approx 300 miles making 7 psi with a 12# pully
Car runs good and smooth, oil pressure (hot) is:
20-25 psi idle
38-40 1900 rpm hiway
50 ish WOT
I have got on it a couple times, but dues to bloing of tubes not very much at all and not over 6k rpm
oil pressure does not fluxuate (SP)
Oil was changed at 25 minutes and
750 miles
looked good both times with very minor gllitor(less the 2nd time, but both time very very little(i alwasy though this was normal for brand new part in brand new motor))
from about 400 miles i noticed a wierd noice simular to an exhuastleak or lose rocker at idle
today i was messing with it and the rockers were fine and i found the noise coming from the timing cover / #5 main bearing area
Sound is a constant whine noise only at idle
One thing i think it may be is cloyes double roller chain? do these make any noise? just currious
if its a spun beaing, i am gunn be pissed as this will be the 5th time in two years. figured a new motor would fix my problem...guess not

Your video didnt come up. If your oil pressure is not fluctuating then I would not put my money on a bearing. Who made your cam? I had a buddy that had a problem with his cam where it chewed up his opti then sent it through the motor. I dont know the hole story but it was along those lines. You might want to look at your dowel pin to make sure there it short enough. Then maybe open the opti to see if it is starting to self-distruct. Compcams is notorious for dowel pins being the wrong length.

Is there any point in time where the noise goes away?

Yah, CC made my dowle pin waayyy to long, but i trimmed it down to exactly the length of my stock cam
BAD 97 WS-6
Only time i can hear sound is on idle. if you notice at the beginning of the movie, when i first start the car, and its aat 1200 ish RPm....no sound...when the rpms come down to 850, then yo hear it.
Also the video in case yall are wondering we takin with no belts on the car(no blower, no asccssessory)
The video worked for me every time i have tried it, try again...if it still wont work try the "get file" function on aim. I have it set up so you can just open a window and get the file with out even talking to me or me having to accept it... My AIM is camarossguy2

Thats weird.
If you spun a bearing, wouldnt you hear it at all rpm levels?

I used lock tight on everything, but never can be to sure. locks like im going to have to pull some crap apart Originally posted by CJ

One other question....
Going by the saying "better safe then sorry"
with my tubular k-member i can pull the pan in like 15 mins.. then pop the #5 main cap off... would it be ok to slide a new bearing in maybe something nice like a coated one?
even if it is not bad/spun? maybe it just somehow got a lil worn... my current oil and the oil i drained out a lil while ago had nothing in it that would stick to a magnet?? good idea?

You would have to pull both pieces if you wanted to do a bearing. If you spun a bearing before, but had block line honed after, I would not worry about it. If its only at low RPM, does temp of the motor make a difference? Also is your blower hooked up?
The blower is hooked up now, but due to the noise of it its not hooked up in the video
Temp does affect my oil pressure, but not by a whole lot.
Im running 10w30 mobile 1 and a couple time when the motor got near 210 the oil pressure went down by 5 degrees or so...but one i got on the highway and the temp went back down it was normal again.
I can get the top bearing even with the crank in. in fact i have done all the bearings with out taking the motor of tranny out

Yes temp of the oil will affect pressure, but does the noise occur at any temp?Originally posted by camarossguy2

Yes you can access the top bearing with out taking the crank out its the bottom you have to worry about.

Noise happens at any temp as far as i have observed.Originally posted by sleeperz28

With the beaing the bottom comes of with the cap and the top one you just push and it will rotate all the way around and fall off. intall you just lube it up and slide it around back between the block and crank.

Watched and listened to the vid... Sounds like exactly the same video that a guy posted in advanced tech a month ago or so. It was the Cloyes Dual roller rubbing the cover. Noise was only at idle, as soon as you rev it it went away. He replaced it with a Rollmaster double roller, and problem was gone. The noise on his video was alot louder, but he said the video made it seem alot louder than it actually was (my friends camera homes in on the loudest noise, this must be the same way) I'll see if I can find that post and link it up. If you have oil press it isn't a bearing!

Follow his story, If I remember right he has a few pics hosted as well. When he removed his timing chain cover, you really couldn't tell it was rubbing... weird! I've been running this chain for almost 3 years and never had a problem with it.
Edit: Looks like the pics are no longer hosted. And it wasn't a rollmaster, it was a Comp Cams true roller. The first and last page seem to have the valid info! I'd look into a new chain!
I just watched both vids, and they are identical sounds!

WOW
That does sound very very simular...lil louder, but then again you said it would due to the camera..
I will look into that definatly...makes me feel better tho

It's the timming cover alright. I had the same thing happen to me 3 years ago. When i finally took the timming cover off 50 miles later, you could see were the chain was rubbing badly. I had to put my cover on a mill and grind off as much as .03 of an inch just to make it clear the gears and chain. Dont run the motor any more till you get that fixed, cause all that metal getting grinded off the cover will go thru the motor and bad things happen. Dont ask me how i know that one.

What crank were you running?
I ran the cloyes before with a stock crank and no clearance issues...
Im no running the eagle and it rubs?? wierd
guess its coming off tomorow
