How BAD is this?

A Procharger/Vortech S Trim with 6lbs of boost. Would an Intercooler/Aftercooler change anything?

Cold weather, sees 0 degrees pretty often in Winter,

Motor has 117k on the clock and mods are in the sig. I know these kits bolt on pretty easily, and the gains are awesome. So... how bad would I need a rebuild soon, if I take it easy on the motor but a nice rompin' once a day or so

lol, I dunno if anyone would be able to answer this one. Anything can happen, although my opinion would be to just do it and deal with it when the time comes. I'm sure the motor could stand it for a resonable time. I'd make sure the engine is warmed up b4 you romp on it(but im sure you know that)

Re: How BAD is this?

What goes on the boost is the pistons and rods right? Mostly anyway... other then seals and whatnot?

Re: How BAD is this?

Usually the ringland of the pistons breaks. It not so much the boost that causes it, it's detonation. If a rod breaks it's usually one of the bolts, the rod just gets mangled from the crank hitting it.

Re: How BAD is this?

To answer the original question, YES an intercooler/aftercooler will be a safer combination due to the fact it will lower the likelyhood of detonation which will help avoid what 97WS6SCharged described.

Re: How BAD is this?

I think thats what I want to to do... 6lbs of boost through a Vortech or Procharger with a inter/aftercooler...

Which would be a better setup you think?

Whats the difference between an after and intercooler?

This should put me in the 400+ rwhp area with headers... ya think?

Procharger's setup is air-to-air. Vortech's aftercooler is an air-to-water unit. Either should be capable of getting you to 400+ at the tires. If you can find a Vortech V2SQ for cheap, grab that. If you have cash on hand, my friend has a spare V1 S trim.

Re: How BAD is this?

Well... I want to go FI because of quick easy way of constant power. But i'm afraid of blowing ****. So thats why i'm thinking 6PSI on my motor as is.

But... how much safer would 6psi be then 8-10 on a stock LT1 with 117k but a brand new valvetrain... stock bottom end, which sucks because thats where most of the boost causes trouble I guess. But the top end is mint

Re: How BAD is this?

Honestly it depends on ur engine thats a question that no one really knows as far as how long your motor will last till you get a rebuild the one thing youll know for sure even if its 6psi your going to rebuild your motor sooner or later just save up for it our engines are not built to handle boost the compression ratio will be to high. I have known several people with 8psi and have been fine for more then a few months, the after coolers will slow it down meaning air traveling because it needs to go through it to cool the air and yes you will gain power because it doesnt slow it much. Main thing with 6psi is make sure you have a good supply of fuel like a inline fuel pump atleast and bigger injectors, and if you get a good tuning youll be fine for a while. Ive known people on LT1 motors with shorty headers, exhaust and intake with the right tuning pull over 400 with 6psi of boost, make sure you get cold plugs as well im sure there is more to cover and more to get but its a long reply as it is, lol.

LT1's handle a 150 shot very nicely. Unfortunately it doesn't make time warp like in Vin Diesel's car...but it's fun anyway. Mine handled it at 88,000 miles for a whole summer, and still ran fine, and the previous owner changed the oil every 6000 miles. When I pulled the motor to get stroked, it showed no evidence of damage from it. Get a good wet kit, you'd be stylin! If N20 doesn't put you at 400 rwhp, I'll show you a green dog!

Re: How BAD is this?

Think I should spray? I think I should just shut up and drop in the Nitrous... you think with my current setup, Long Tube Headers, and a 100 shot of spray I can hit 11's?

Once I get the Nitrous, what else would have to be changed?
