have some questions about turbo build up..

first off, single or twin. i know that a twin would be more efficient but single would be easier to create. for you guys that are running singles, how difficult was it to make the passenger side header to get the exhaust to the turbo? i have heard that you can use a set of s10 v8 headers if you wanted to go with a twin setup. has anyone done this or seen it? basically once i decide whether i want a single or twin setup i will need to get started on the headers and this is where any help from you guys that have fabbed up your own headers would greatly be appreciated.

thanks
Bobby

Re: have some questions about turbo build up..

A set of S10 V8 headers can work, but you will have to modify them to the extent that making them from scratch will be easier, and just about the same cost. I would recommend a twin setup, It's not much more work than a single. I did mine with the stock accessory bracket, and AC delete. It's tight but it fits, and pretty well. Another option for a twin kit (which will be what I do next) would be to get a Madman Manual Rack and his Alt relocation kit and mount the turbo's straight ahead of the engine (kinda like sleeperZ28's)

After you make your headers, leak test them I found that out the hard way, but WTF ya gotta learn somehow. You can check my webpage for some pics of the build process.

I used the upside down S-10 headers on mine, had to mod the collectors for the turbo flanges, and reroute one tube on the drivers side to clear my upper control arm. Probably not an issue on a 4th gen.

What about the accessory bracket on the pass side??? No header no matter what car/truck it's from is going to make it past that to mount a turbo up there. Going to have to be custom!

Early Camaro's got room, 4th gens don't, look at my engine bay, there is NONE!

The first set of headers I tried were from a late 80's early 90's Chevy truck. It wasn't a bolt on a turbo flange and go type of fit. They would have had to be completely dissassembled and rerouted. I just bit the bullet and sold them. The 1/4 inch flange didn't appear to beefy either.

Re: have some questions about turbo build up..

Yeah, I don't have the stock f-body acc bracket, I made a custom lower alt mount on the drivers side. The stock bracket won't clear the 1st gen frame anyhow. P/S and A/C... what's that?

I think in a 4th gen the best bet would be to start with one of the weld up kits, and route it where it needs to be. I always thought the front corners (where the battery is) would be a good spot for turbos in a 4th gen, you can get easy cold air on either side.
