Destroyed supercharger impeller blades

Can someone post me what they think about this???

I am awfully worried about it..

http://czar.cnnet.upr.edu/~chris/impeller.JPG Big Pic
http://czar.cnnet.upr.edu/~chris/impellerb.JPG Smaller Pic

maybe this is the reason why its only pumping 10psi with a 6.66 crank and 2.75 blower pulley...

Not exactly sure how this happenned or when, but the car was running fine before I took it off... Any thing to worry about or to check?

Let me know

Weird, that is on the inlet side of the blower, right? You never ran it without a air cleaner on it, did you?

Maybe the bypass valve wasn't working. That is crazy looking.

What does that have to do with the bypass valve??

Anyways... I did ran it a few days without air cleaner.. but where brief necessary trips... Maybe that explains why I lost 2psi boost instead of 1/2 psi that I should have lost with the vortech aftercooler...

The MAF is up top so the Bypass valve is being vented to atmosphere...

Its a high quality pic so you can zoom it

Dayum! I downloaded it to zoom in.. them things are munched. The way they are shaved, and all being the same, sure looks like some foreign matter got in there. There isn't any way a part of the intake could get sucked in there, by chance? I am not that familiar with the intake piping...

If the bypass valve wasn't working, and you were getting reverse boost, I would think it would show up on the backside of the impeller, not the front?

Either way, that needs replaced..

Yes, it's clear something was ingested and contacted the blades while they were at speed. The fact that the edges of the blades where they are next to the compressor housing are not really hurt pretty much rules out bearing play and impeller / housing contact as the culprit.

It's bad enough that the blower is damaged, but what's worse is all that shrapnel went through the motor....

I have read that if the bov is not working then when the throttle is slammed shut, damage can occur to compressor wheel. That is probly more true for turbo's then superchargers.

it will need repaired. hope your not planning on putting it back on like that. the balance could be off now and chances of crashing the impellar under high rpms is likely. besides, you've loset some boost and its not worth chancing more shrapnal through the engine. just not sure what your intensions were. kinda sounded like you were wondering if it was ok to put back on and not spend the $$ for the fix. gotta fix it.

later,

mike

Vortech wants 480... I thought of ditching it and look for a T-trim used over the net in a few days and see...

I am not going to put it back in, I was wondering what could have caused this?

The weird thing is they're all cut in the same shape.

Yes.. as if something really big got in there for a while and then got out..

Funny enough.. on a friends dragster with huge TTs... a mosquito killed one impeller.. ouch..
