Considering winter project (turbo related)
Considering winter project (turbo related)
Things have slowed down in the economy as you all are aware. This has caused a delay in myself making a captain upgrade in my company. Since I rarely go outside in the winter I am able to save much more than I do in the spring and summer. This has led me towards a winter project and I'm wondering what your opinions would be.
Ideally, I would go with a Realquick front mount setup but I won't have that sort of spare cash till I'm sitting left seat (captain). In the mean time, I'd like to sell my Powerdyne and use some remaining cash to pick up a used STS kit for my Z. This in all likely hood won't be my permanent setup, just something to give me to do in the winter this year. I've seen them sell from 2k to 3k but I have a few questions that I haven't been able to find the answers to on my own.
Most people seem to run these setups with a T60 on a stock motor. What would you recommend for a setup like mine? My engine builder said to steer clear of anything over 12psi as the mains (2 bolt) would come into question, so that is my limiting factor. I've seen plenty of numbers on a stock car, but I haven't seen much in the way of a modified LT1 and I would like to explore that route. FMIC is assumed, meth would be a possible option. Also considered would be a quick spool valve. What are your thoughts?
I'm looking for something challenging to do and have a fun car to drive when spring rolls around, not to go faster than the next guy. I've always been about the DD aspect
I own a 87 GN that's modded to high hell and is a blast to drive. It's sitting on blocks at my folks place awaiting my ability to support 2 modded vehicles. I miss driving a turbo car and would like to take my Z down that route. The GN is on the back burner for now.

Most engine builders are overly careful. They don't want you coming back blaiming them. That said... 12psi on a studded 2 bolt main cap will probably not be your weak point on the build. You don't really shock the caps with a turbo. Sure you can get some quick spooling setups, but its nothing like spraying 3-400 shot into the intake. Its still a gradual build of power.
I have studded 2 bolt mains, have made well over 700tq for a good 5k miles and even though I'm breaking stuff... the main caps and bearings always look perfect.

When I settle down with a good job (2012 hopefully) the GN will come with me. Right now there are too many pilots and not enough jobs, this is projected to reverse around 2012 when a large portion of pilots will have to retire. This is why I'm considering this project for this year, any input?
